Gaming Preview: An Exclusive Look at 007: First Light

At Gamescom 2025, I had the distinct opportunity to delve into 007: First Light, where a developer guided us through an early mission. This preview highlighted the captivating blend of elements from IO Interactive’s renowned Hitman series, all while infusing it with the stylish personality and high-stakes drama synonymous with the James Bond franchise.

The mission unfolded in a picturesque, sunlit European countryside. Here, Bond takes on the role of a novice agent, initially serving as a chauffeur for his allies en route to a luxurious hotel, all to track down the rogue Agent 009. This early portrayal sets the stage for Bond’s evolution from a rookie to the iconic spy we all recognize.

Similar to the structure in Hitman, the mission commenced with a cinematic briefing by Moneypenny, establishing a compelling narrative backdrop before Bond stepped into action.

The gameplay prominently featured stealth mechanics. Players experienced Bond navigating through tall grass, employing diversions to mislead guards, and utilizing his Q-watch to unveil critical clues scattered throughout the environment. IO’s hallmark design philosophy of combining a “sandbox within structure” remains intact, offering a balance of linear challenges and expansive open areas that encourage player creativity.

The Significance of Bond’s License to Kill

The game’s unique take on the “license to kill” mechanic introduces an intriguing layer. Unlike Hitman, players cannot simply eliminate foes indiscriminately.
