The 60th Baeksang Arts Awards were held at COEX D Hall in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the evening of May 7th, with Shin Dong-yeop, Park Bo-gum, and Suzy serving as the event’s MCs.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Baeksang Arts Awards, where the event was filled with numerous emotional moments.
Soldier Lee Do-hyun’s Simple Love Confession to Jiyeon
The news of Lee Do-hyun expressing his love for his girlfriend, Lim Ji-yeon, caused a stir. When he accepted the award for Best New Actor in the Film category for his role in “Exhuma”, Lee Do-hyun confidently took to the stage like a soldier.
Lee Do-hyun introduced himself as Corporal Lim Dong-hyun, who previously worked as an actor under the name Lee Do-hyun. He mentioned that he had recently taken a leave from the army that morning. Although he was supposed to prepare an acceptance speech, he had not done so and now regrets it, expressing his strong emotions.
Upon expressing his appreciation to the “Exhuma”team, which comprised of the director and cast members, Lee Do-hyun also extended his gratitude to his beloved father, mother, brother, and his pet dog Gaeul, as well as Ji-yeon ah.
Colleagues’ Reflection on the Late Lee Sun-kyun
During the award ceremony, a tribute was paid to the late Lee Sun-kyun, who sadly passed away on December 27th of last year. Chun Woo-hee, who presented the Screenplay Award for both TV and Film categories, took a moment to look at the list of nominees before announcing the winners. She then shared, “I noticed that the late Lee Sun-kyun was featured in two of the nominated works. His exceptional acting in these pieces will always hold a special place in our hearts.”The late actor appeared in “Killing Romance”and “Sleep”.
Despite facing tough competition from a number of exceptional nominees, director Yoo Jae-sun of “Sleep” emerged as the winner and received an award. In place of director Yoo, who could not attend the event, producer Kim Hee-kyung delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech, expressing gratitude to all the officials, actors, and staff who believed in the script’s potential and supported its production. Special thanks were also given to the late actor Lee Sun-kyun for his exceptional portrayal, which brought the story to life.
Lee Soon-jae’s Acting Moves Fellow Actors to Tears
This year, at the awards ceremony, Lee Soon-jae‘s brief yet powerful acting moved all of the actors to tears.
On stage, Lee Soon-jae performed a brief play centered around an interview with casting staff. In his introduction, he proudly declared, “I am Lee Soon-jae, at 90 years young. Having made my debut in 1956, I have acted in a total of 175 dramas, 150 movies, and under 100 plays.”He also took the time to express his gratitude towards fellow actors including Choi Min-sik and Lee Byung-hun.
The seasoned actor reflected, “Despite my age, I am often asked if memorizing lines is a difficult task. My response has always been, ‘It’s a fundamental aspect of being an actor. How can one perform without knowing their lines? It requires pouring your soul into the words, but what if you struggle with memorization? If you lack confidence in this skill, perhaps acting isn’t the right path for you.”The actor went on to say, “Even after a lifetime in this profession, there are still challenges I face. That’s why I approach each new role with careful consideration. Acting is about pushing boundaries and creating new characters. It’s not an easy feat, which is why many who thought otherwise have faded from the industry.
Finally, Lee Soon-jae delivered a brief performance in “King Lear”and expressed his desire to be remembered as a hardworking actor.
