2024 MBC Drama Awards: A Tribute to Kim Soo-mi

The 2024 MBC Drama Awards, initially set to broadcast live on December 30, was aired on January 5 following a pre-recording. The rescheduling came as a response to a tragic event—the accident involving a Jeju Air flight just a day prior.

Remembering Kim Soo-mi

During the ceremony, MBC’s Chae Soo-bin took a poignant moment to honor the late Kim Soo-mi, a cherished figure in Korean drama. She stated, “We would like to take this time to honor the late Kim Soo-mi, a great star of Korean drama, and reflect on the beautiful memories she left behind. As we watch the video, I hope everyone can feel her warm smile and deep resonance as we celebrate her legacy.”

A Special Recognition

In a heartwarming segment of the event, a special gratitude plaque was awarded posthumously to Kim Soo-mi, with her daughter-in-law, actress Seo Hyo-rim, graciously accepting it on her behalf.

Seo Hyo-rim expressed her deep emotions, reflecting on her personal connection to MBC: “As I came to MBC today, many thoughts crossed my mind. My mother-in-law debuted in 1970 as part of MBC’s 3rd public recruitment, and the first time my mother-in-law and I met was on MBC’s ‘Man in the Kitchen’ in 2017. MBC is where we first connected, and it feels like MBC is the one that sent me to my marriage. It’s a very special bond with my mother-in-law and such a precious place for me, so I wanted to share my happy thoughts as we look toward next year.”

Reflections Amid National Grief

In her heartfelt speech, Seo Hyo-rim also addressed the broader context of sorrow in South Korea, saying, “However, unexpectedly, our beloved country, South Korea, has been going through so much pain. I thought if I eased my own pain, things would get brighter, but with the sad news coming at the end of the year, I feel uncertain about how to handle it. My mother used to say, ‘Yesterday is the past, today is a gift, and tomorrow is a mystery.’ I want to thank MBC for honoring my mother’s memory, and I wish for a new year where all of us, as citizens of South Korea, can rise together.”

In Legacy of Kim Soo

Kim Soo-mi passed away on October 25 at the age of 75. She was admitted to Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital in a state of cardiac arrest, and her death was attributed to high blood sugar shock caused by diabetes and other chronic health issues.
