The Japanese entertainment industry has been facing a series of shocking controversies and suicides since September of last year. It all began with the passing of actress Aiki, which was further exacerbated by the involvement of her colleagues. This has been an ongoing struggle for the industry, with no end in sight.
In September 2023, Aiki, an actress from the renowned theater company Takarazuka Revue, was discovered deceased. The police initially attributed her death to overwork, but her family disputed this and demanded a more thorough investigation. They also filed a lawsuit against the company for their lack of sincerity in apologizing and sought compensation.
In March 2024, the police’s shocking revelation about the circumstances surrounding Aiki’s death caused a nationwide sensation. According to the police, Aiki had allegedly been subjected to harassment by 14 individuals, including a director, two producers, and other actors from the same company. Following the police’s announcement, only four of them issued formal apologies.
According to reports, these individuals utilized their power to bully and mistreat her. Aiki was subjected to hair curling and was also forced to work 277 hours per month, which went beyond the typical working hours of 118 hours.
Thanks to the efforts of Aiki’s family, the truth has been uncovered. In a press conference held by Takarazuka Revue’s CEO Kenshi Koba, a heartfelt apology was given to both the bereaved family and the public. Additionally, he pledged to implement stricter regulations within the company to promote a safe and supportive working environment for all employees and aspiring actors.
