2NE1’s Comeback: Is it Enough to Save YG?

It has been recently announced by YG Entertainment that 2NE1 will be performing live in Seoul on October 5 and 6.

As stated in the announcement, the show is titled “Welcome Back”to signify the comeback of the second-generation girl group. This will mark 2NE1’s first live performance since their unexpected disbandment by YG in 2016.

Ever since their unexpected appearance at Coachella 2022, 2NE1 has solidified their enduring reign in the world of K-pop, making a lasting impact on the international stage. As a result, ticket demands skyrocketed upon YG’s official confirmation of their live concert. Following these two shows, 2NE1 will set off on a worldwide tour that will span until 2025.

Despite the comeback of 2NE1, YG stands out as one of the few companies that continues to oversee girl groups from three distinct generations: 2NE1 (2nd gen), BLACKPINK (3rd gen), and BABYMONSTER (5th gen). Although this news may thrill some fans, there are also worries regarding the company’s progress.

Earlier reports indicated that YG’s operating profits for the second quarter of this year saw a significant decrease of 98.9% in comparison to the same time frame last year. The main contributing factor was the departure of their top groups, BIGBANG and BLACKPINK, leaving a void that was too difficult for a rookie group like BABYMONSTER to fill.

Therefore, it appears that YG Entertainment has made the decision to bring back artists they had previously released, such as 2NE1. This decision is being viewed as a desperate effort to overcome the current decline.

The question remains: can 2NE1 alone revive the company? The group’s highly anticipated comeback not only brings excitement but also considerable pressure. A promising indication is that many 2NE1 members, particularly CL, have gained international recognition. Fans have high hopes that 2NE1 will successfully lay the groundwork for YG Entertainment’s comeback.
