4 Korean Movies Failed Despite Starring Top Actors

Alienoid

Despite introducing a star-studded cast including Ryu Jun-yeol, Kim Tae-ri, Kim Woo-bin, Lee Ha-nee, Yeom Jung-ah, Jo Woo-jin, Kim Eui-sung and Jin Sun-kyu, and having a massive production budget of 37 billion won for each part, neither installment of “Alienoid”was able to achieve box-office success. In order to break even, the movie series needed to sell 14 million tickets, but it fell short with a total of only 3 million viewers.

Korean media also had unfavorable opinions about the quality of “Alienoid”. According to The Korea Herald, the film was described as having a “chaotic story”, while Hankook Ilbo noted that despite the improvement in the latter part, the inclusion of numerous characters from different timelines caused confusion for viewers.

Broker

In 2022, the highly anticipated Korean film “Broker”was directed by renowned Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu. It featured acclaimed actors such as Song Kang-ho, Kang Dong-won, Lee Ji-eun (IU), and Lee Joo-young. The film was even invited to compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Despite its premiere in theaters, “Broker”only gained 1.26 million admissions, falling below its break-even point of 1.5 million admissions. However, some attributed this outcome to the heavy storyline.

Update on Emergency Declaration

“Gaining immense popularity in 2021, “Emergency Declaration”features acclaimed actors Song Kang-ho, Lee Byung-hun, and Jeon Do-yeon. The film portrays two parallel storylines- one following the plight of 150 passengers on a chaotic flight, and the other depicting the efforts of aviation staff, family members, politicians, and police on the ground to ensure the safe landing of the plane.”

Despite its thrilling survival story, the drama failed to captivate viewers and fell short of its intended success, selling only 2 million tickets instead of the necessary 5 million to reach the break-even point. Disappointed viewers voiced their complaints, citing the outdated and uninteresting script as the main reason, despite the actors’ commendable performances.

Wonderland

Starring Tang Wei, Bae Suzy, Park Bo-gum, Jung Yoo-mi and Choi Woo-seok, the movie “Wonderland”premiered in June but has already been deemed a failure. Despite only being 6 days since its release, the film has only sold 490,000 tickets. At this rate, it will be extremely challenging for “Wonderland”to reach its break-even point of 2.9 million admissions. The movie is also at risk of being pulled from theaters early and suffering significant losses. According to reviews, many viewers have criticized the film’s script for having too many unrealistic details and plot developments.
