4 Korean Movies That Didn’t Succeed Despite Having A-List Casts

Exploring the World of Alienoids

Despite the star-studded cast including Ryu Jun-yeol, Kim Tae-ri, Kim Woo-bin, Lee Ha-nee, Yeom Jung-ah, Jo Woo-jin, Kim Eui-sung and Jin Sun-kyu and a whopping production cost of 37 billion won for each installment, the “Alienoid”movie series failed to achieve success at the box office. In order to break even, the two movies needed to sell a total of 14 million tickets, but they only managed to attract a total of 3 million viewers.

Moreover, Korean media also criticized the quality of “Alienoid”. The Korea Herald described it as “a chaotic story”, and Hankook Ilbo stated that while the second half was an improvement, the abundance of characters from various timelines made it confusing for viewers.

What is a Broker?

The Korean movie “Broker”was highly anticipated in 2022, thanks to its famous Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu. The film features a talented cast including Song Kang-ho, Kang Dong-won, Lee Ji-eun (IU) and Lee Joo-young, and was even selected to compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Despite its premiere in theaters, “Broker”only gained 1.26 million admissions, which was lower than its break-even point of 1.5 million admissions. Nonetheless, some attributed this result to the weighty storyline of the film.

Emergency Declaration

In 2021, “Emergency Declaration”gained significant attention for its star-studded cast including actors Song Kang-ho, Lee Byung-hun, and Jeon Do-yeon. The film follows two parallel storylines – one about a flight with 150 passengers facing chaos, and the other about the efforts of aviation staff, family members, politicians, and police on the ground to safely land the plane.

Despite its thrilling survival story, the drama failed to captivate viewers and fell short of the break-even point by selling only 2 million tickets instead of the needed 5 million. Numerous viewers expressed disappointment with the outdated and unengaging script, even with the stellar performances of the actors.

Wonderland

“Despite casting well-known actors such as Tang Wei, Bae Suzy, Park Bo-gum, Jung Yoo-mi, and Choi Woo-seok, the movie “Wonderland”has been deemed a failure. Despite only premiering in June, the film has already struggled at the box office, selling a mere 490,000 tickets within the first 6 days. With such low numbers, it is doubtful that “Wonderland”will even reach its break-even point of 2.9 million admissions. Sadly, the movie may have to end its run early and suffer significant financial losses. Critics and viewers have pointed out numerous flaws in the script, including illogical details and plot developments.”
