5 Ill-Fitting K-drama Castings of Leading Female Characters (ft. Kim Yoo-jung)

Casting is essential for the success of K-dramas, as it greatly impacts the overall quality of the production. In fact, miscasting in K-dramas has often resulted in negative reviews and criticism from viewers, greatly impacting their enjoyment of the show.

In the world of recent K-dramas, there have been 5 notable cases where the casting choices for leading female characters have been less than ideal.

Hong Su-zu – “The Impossible Heir”

Hong Su-zu’s debut as Na Hye-won in “The Impossible Heir” marked her first starring role. Playing a stunning and diligent woman from humble beginnings, she becomes caught in the conflict for inheritance between two male protagonists.

Despite its airing, “The Impossible Heir” did not achieve success and faced significant backlash from viewers. Hong Su-zu’s portrayal was deemed the most underwhelming aspect of the production. Her performance was heavily criticized for lacking emotion and coming across as robotic throughout the series. The Korean media went as far as to compare her delivery to reciting from a textbook.

Crash Course In Romance

Jeon Do-yeon is highly acclaimed for her diverse range of acting abilities in Korean films. Despite this, some audience members believed that she was not the right fit for her role in “Crash Course In Romance” . The movie centers on Nam Haeng-seon, a retired national handball player who transitions to cooking and caring for her niece after leaving the world of professional athletics.

Despite receiving praise for her performance, there were viewers who believed Jeon Do-yeon did not fit the role of a woman in her early thirties with a teenage niece. Furthermore, her on-screen pairing with the significantly younger Jung Kyung-ho in this romantic comedy sparked doubts about the director’s casting decisions.

3. Marry My Husband by BoA

In the popular drama “Marry My Husband”, BoA took on the role of Oh Yu-ra, the antagonist who was both strikingly beautiful and devious in her business endeavors. While her performance received backlash, it was not only for her acting skills but also for her looks.

Despite her title as the “Queen of Kpop”, many viewers at the time did not believe that BoA portrayed the image of a wealthy heiress well. Her co-stars often outshone her character, and her artificially enlarged lips and stiff expressions sparked controversy. Some viewers even expressed a desire to change the channel whenever BoA appeared on screen.

To Ara

Despite the strong performances by male actors such as Park Hyung-sik, Park Seo-joon, and V from BTS, the historical drama “Hwarang”faced criticism for casting Go Ara as the female lead. Many viewers felt that her limited acting skills were overshadowed by the dynamic male cast, leading to suggestions that the show would have been better without a female lead at all.

5. Kim Yoo-jung – “My Demon”

Despite the visual appeal of its main characters, “My Demon”received criticism for the performance of Kim Yoo-jung. Many felt that, despite her young age (born in 1999), her appearance was not suitable for the role of a cold heiress and thus she was accused of being miscast.
