A Thousand Blows offers a sharp look at Victorian London, focusing on the world of bare-knuckle boxing and an all-female group of criminals known as the Forty Elephants.
The initial two episodes premiered at the London Film Festival, and while a full review is forthcoming as we approach its release on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ in the U.K., here’s why this series is a must-watch, highlighted by insights from Knight and his cast during the post-screening Q&A session.
A Thousand Blows Is Inspired by Remarkable True Events

This compelling series features three protagonists grounded in reality. Stephen Graham portrays Sugar Goodson, a notorious bare-knuckle boxer, while Erin Doherty plays Mary Carr, the self-proclaimed Queen of the Forty Elephants crime syndicate.
The third key figure, Hezekiah Moscow, played by Malachi Kirby, travels from Jamaica to East London with dreams of a fresh start. However, he soon finds himself clashing with Goodson and is drawn into the criminal world by Carr.
Moscow is the story’s main character, and Knight emphasized the significance of representing diverse historical narratives by asking, “Why should we overlook 75% of the stories available?”
Kirby also underlined the uniqueness of this portrayal, commenting, “It’s rare to see Jamaicans depicted as intelligent individuals. He is strong not out of brutality, but as a necessity—a reflection of many of our stories.”
An “Extraordinary” Cast
Director Nick Murphy praised the series’ incredible cast, which features talents such as Daniel Mays, Tom Davis, and Hannah Walters, highlighting their ability to fulfill Knight’s exceptional scripts.
“This is challenging to perform, but our cast excels at embodying that dynamic, balancing lyrical delivery with authentic human emotion,” Murphy added.

Stephen Graham shared insights into how the cast prepared for their roles through extensive research, only to set aside this knowledge to capture genuine performances.
“We dove deep into research,” Graham explained. “We explored historical accounts and pinpointed elements within our characters that resonated with us.”
“However, we also collaborated to develop backstories. Steve had one-on-one sessions with us… we dedicated significant time to understanding our characters’ histories—they are survivors.”
“You absorb all this information, but ultimately, it must be discarded. You take what’s written and work with wonderful directors who create a space for you to perform,” he noted.
“The magic lies in playing the truth of that moment, engaging authentically with your surroundings,” Graham concluded.
Reality Surpasses Fiction in A Thousand Blows
For Knight and his team, historical accuracy is non-negotiable. He stated, “To capture the truth, it’s more effective to consult newspapers, court transcripts, and similar sources instead of textbooks. The real events are often far more compelling than anything we could invent.”
He elaborated, “Life is eccentric and unpredictable; sometimes, the true stories are so bizarre that they seem unbelievable. Our goal is to reflect that unpredictability in our narrative.”
Knight further emphasized, “What you create from imagination is often predictable, as it stems from logical reasoning. In contrast, life isn’t bound by logic, so exploring actual events, behaviors, and circumstances is invaluable.”
The Stakes Are at Their Highest
