QWER Siyeon Criticized for Comments on Childbirth and Marriage
Within a popular online forum titled, “QWER Main Vocalist’s Perspectives on Marriage,”Korean internet users came together to share their thoughts on member Siyeon’s beliefs about marriage and having children.
The author shared screenshots from the YouTube channel “Charming Jo,”featuring Siyeon’s appearance which was released on March 6. In the video, the host asked Siyeon about her role model, former AKB48 member Watanabe Mayu, initiating the conversation.
Siyeon expressed her admiration for her idol, praising both her stage performances and aura. She also couldn’t help but rave about how the idol gave off a charming “younger sister”vibe. This prompted the host to ask Siyeon if she wanted to have a child in hopes of having an ideal, cute daughter like her idol.
Charming Jo: “Why is she your role model?”
Siyeon: “She’s like my super senpai. If you see all her performances from way back, she’s ‘the’ idol. Kind of like, a little sister figure and I’m kind of into ‘Lolita.”
Charming Jo: “So, you like those young and cute kind of (people).”
Siyeon: “Like a younger sister. With a pigtail hair”
Charming Jo: “Yeah, younger sister-like. Pigtail hair and cute face. Then is that the reason why you want to get married? To have a daughter like that?”
Siyeon caused a stir in the community when she shared her candid views on marriage and childbirth, which were perceived by some as being too conventional.
Siyeon: “No, it has something to do with procreation. As we humans are born to reproduce, it’s our duty to reproduce. So, by getting married, I’m fulfilling my duty to procreate.”
Charming Jo: “(Laughs) For the survival of humanity?”
Siyeon: “Yes, exactly! For the survival of humanity, I should have a daughter or a son.”
Charming Jo: “You’re a very responsible person, you have a strong sense of responsibility. When we talk about marriage, most people would talk about how their ceremony will go or how they’ll make a family with kids who look exactly like them.”
Charming Jo: “But saying ‘As human beings, it’s our duty to procreate’ is something they don’t usually say you know?”
