7 Contenders for the New Gen Anime Big 3 Title, Ranked Least to Most Popular

In the past decade, there has been a frequent discussion in the anime community about which series should be considered the new generation Big 3. This can be a challenging topic to understand, as the term “new gen”refers to manga series that debuted after 2010, such as My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen. The anime Big 3 is a reference to the original Big 3 – One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach – which gained worldwide popularity and helped elevate the anime genre.

Essentially, there is a debate among fans about which anime series of the new generation will be considered the equivalent of the original anime Big 3. This is no easy task. Despite the ongoing discussion about whether or not it is possible to replicate the success of the Big 3, there are a handful of new anime series that are strong contenders for the throne of the next generation.

New generation anime Big 3 contenders include Boruto, Frieren, and more

Boruto

Despite being considered the underdog in the new generation anime Big 3 race, Boruto is not in a disadvantageous position. The first part of the anime may suffer from a combination of filler and anime canon, as well as subpar animation due to its weekly schedule. Additionally, the narrative of the first part may not be as engaging in certain aspects.

Despite any potential criticisms, Boruto deserves recognition for its future adaptation into the Two Blue Vortex anime. This will signify the beginning of the second part of the series, which has already garnered almost a year of serialization in the manga and has achieved impressive milestones, such as surpassing One Piece in certain readership figures. Despite starting with some challenges, the series remains a strong contender in the current landscape.

Chainsaw Man

After making a strong impression in the Fall 2022 anime season, Chainsaw Man quickly became a topic of discussion as a potential member of the next generation of the “Big 3″anime. Its distinctive power system, dark fantasy aesthetic, and focus on character development were all key factors in its widespread appeal, despite some divisive elements in the series.

Furthermore, the series’ longevity also adds to its appeal, as all three of the original Big 3 anime have run for exceptionally long periods of time. The manga is currently in its second part and shows no signs of concluding anytime soon. Creator Tatsuki Fujimoto has even expressed a desire to extend the series into three parts. To put it into perspective, the anime has only covered less than half of the first part at the time of writing this article.

Black Clover

Similarly to Boruto, Black Clover, also produced by Pierrot, faced challenges in maintaining a weekly release schedule over the course of several years. Despite facing similar difficulties, Black Clover found more success than Boruto, but like its counterpart, the anime was eventually put on hold as the manga continued. However, recent reports from Pierrot indicate that the series may return on a seasonal basis, solidifying its position as a strong contender for the title of the next generation’s “Big 3″anime.

Despite this, there are still numerous reasons why the series remains a top contender. Its thrilling power system, endearing and intricately crafted main and supporting characters, spectacular battles with impactful and sensible resolutions, and other elements are what truly elevate the series. These qualities were already recognized by fans during its initial release and it is hoped that even more will appreciate them upon its revival.

4) Freeze: Beyond Journey’s End

The Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End anime made its debut during the Fall 2023 anime season and quickly became the talk of the town. Its widespread popularity was evident as it dominated discussions and surpassed long-standing favorite Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood by approximately 0.3 stars to become the highest-rated anime on the renowned site MyAnimeList.

Frieren stands out for its framed narrative, centered around the life of the series’ elven protagonist. This storytelling technique creates an engaging plot that may keep fans in suspense, but ultimately delivers satisfying answers in a timely manner. Additionally, the animation by Madhouse Studios, the potential for a long-lasting story, and the endearing main and side characters solidify Frieren as a top contender.

3) My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia is a strong contender for the title of the new gen anime Big 3, making it a tough series to surpass. Kohei Horikoshi’s creation has gained immense popularity, thanks in part to the relatable and well-developed protagonist, Izuku “Deku”Midoriya. His character stands out as one of the most humanized and relatable in recent memory, contributing greatly to the series’ success.

The Quirks power system has played a significant role in the series’ popularity, adding a fresh and intriguing spin on the common theme of humans developing superpowers. Furthermore, the villains are equally well-crafted and intricately portrayed, thanks to Studio BONES’ exceptional animation, an almost flawless OST, and numerous standout moments in the story.

Demon Slayer

Undoubtedly, Demon Slayer is a strong contender for the title of top new generation anime, and a major factor in this is its role in the revitalization of the medium in the West. With the coincidence of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns in America, numerous individuals attribute their newfound love for anime to their introduction to Demon Slayer during this period. This achievement is similarly acknowledged by fans of the original Big 3, highlighting its notable impact.

It is not surprising that Demon Slayer possesses many of the same strengths previously mentioned. These include an endearing and fully developed cast, a distinctive power system with captivating visuals, exceptional animation from Ufotable studios, and a relatable story despite its fantastical elements. It is without a doubt that creator Koyoharu Gotouge’s series holds a prominent position amongst the next anime Big 3.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Despite the numerous contenders for the next installment of the popular anime Big 3, many fans believe that author and illustrator Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen series will take the top spot. This is due to its highly innovative and distinctive power system, which allows for unparalleled and one-of-a-kind abilities and fighting techniques. Along with its focus on fast-paced action and impressive choreography, it is considered to be the most successful battle shonen of the 2010s decade.

Furthermore, while the series may not have the same level of depth as other entries on this list, it surpasses them all in terms of enthrallment, thanks to the captivating journey of protagonist Yuji Itadori. Along with endearing supporting characters like Satoru Gojo, the series also boasts truly heinous villains who stand out for their distinctive methods, as well as thought-provoking themes such as self-discovery and finding one’s purpose in life. Thus, it firmly solidifies its position as a dominant force in the medium today.

In summation

The discussion surrounding whether the anime Big 3 can be duplicated is a controversial one. However, it is evident that the aforementioned series are the top contenders for representing the new generation’s equivalent of the group. With the constant release of new anime and manga each season, the potential candidates for the new gen anime Big 3 are subject to change at any moment without prior notice.
