The creators of the current series, Shogun, have explained why a season 2 may never see the light of day.
Adapting James Clavell’s 1975 novel, the Shogun series was an instant hit: presented as the new Game of Thrones – which does not particularly please its director – the production was unanimously acclaimed. A successful adaptation, splendid production and photography, exceptional actors and judicious choices for the languages used have contributed to its success.
Obviously, given so much enthusiasm, we could expect a sequel. Except that there is a catch: unfortunately for the spectators, the showrunners’ speech does not go in this direction. The series may have broken the viewing record for FX and on Disney+, but it will probably not be entitled to its season 2.
Shogun Season 2 May Never Happen, Show Creators Say
It was during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the ax fell: showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks discussed season 2, and made it clear that there would be none.
When asked about it, Justin Marks explained: “We took the story to the end of the book and gave it a full stop. We love the way the book ends. It was even one of the reasons that convinced us to adapt it – and we concluded the series in the same way.”
Because if Shogun is based on a true story, the series above all adapts the book by James Clavell. However, this is not the only reason given by the creators, who also reported a certain physical and mental exhaustion: “It’s just our body talking. A bit like when you wonder if you want another child. You know, we’ve been working on this series for a very long time, because of the very long post-production. It’s not a TV series like any other.”
Shogun will therefore stop at ten episodes. In the meantime, the series is still in progress, and is released on Disney+ in France.
