The international release of The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim is scheduled for December 13, 2024. However, North American audiences will have the opportunity to see it on the big screen two days earlier, on December 11, 2024.
The release of the animated film was initially scheduled for April 12, 2024. However, a decision was made to delay it by eight months. Fortunately, the wait is almost over as the release date has been confirmed and will not be postponed.
The announcement of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim’ being in production was made in June 2021. Despite the long wait, we can look forward to recapturing some of the magic, and it is unlikely that this will be the end. In February 2023, Warner Bros signed a deal with Middle-earth Enterprises, promising a plethora of upcoming movies for fans.
2. What happens in the trailer?
The War of Rohirrim trailer has recently been released, and it is absolutely spectacular. The trailer begins with footage from the previous installments of the franchise, gradually immersing us into the medieval fantasy atmosphere. Then, in a surprising turn, it transports us into the animated realm.
The trailer provides significant insight into the upcoming battle. It is revealed that the conflict will not involve humans against other races, but rather a battle between two men. The time of calm and tranquility has left the kings and nobles with a thirst for power.

It is evident that a greedy king challenges Helm to a duel without weapons, possibly wagering their kingdom or the hand of Hera in marriage. Known as the Hammerhand, Helm emerges victorious and kills the king.
As a result, Hera’s childhood sweetheart, who happens to be his son, becomes overwhelmed with anger and sorrow. He retaliates by declaring war on Rohan in order to seek vengeance for his father. His initial intention was to win Hera’s heart.
Despite being a princess, Hera stands out among her peers with her exceptional skills in riding and taming colossal creatures. As she leads the white horse (a nod to LOTR) fully clad in armor into battle, it is clear that she is ready to directly engage in the fight.
Setting and Plot
The events of The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim take place 183 years before the events depicted in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, and thousands of years after the events of Rings of Power.
Despite the presence of political undercurrents and ambitious powers, the overall atmosphere is one of peace, although not without force. For the general public, it can be described as a time of tranquility and serenity.
Despite the brief period of quiet, it is clear that Sauron is still relentlessly searching for the One Ring. This is hinted at in the trailer, where we witness a treasure hunter collecting rings and adding them to a nearly full satchel.
It is evident that Helm, also known as the “Hammerhand”for his incredible strength in hand-to-hand combat, is the ruler of Rohan. His regal demeanor and tough love, along with his genuine care for the protagonist, Hera, are all traits that are clearly displayed.
3. Hera the Heroine
The protagonist is revealed to be a female character, Helm’s daughter, who was previously unknown and unnamed in Tolkien’s original work. Philippa Boyens, a renowned LOTR producer, shared that she and screenwriter Phoebe Gittins (also Philippa’s daughter) were responsible for this decision.
She mentioned that in the appendices, the male characters were depicted in a captivating manner, while the unnamed young female character caught her attention.
“We are aware that Helm has a daughter who played a significant role in the conflict. However, both myself and screenwriter Phoebe Gittins were particularly intrigued by her character.”
As we sensed the burden of being the unknown daughter, our curiosity was immediately sparked: Who was she? How did she exist? This is where their creative brilliance lies. As admirers, our only wish is for the essence of the Lord of the Rings franchise to be preserved in this film.
Based on our observations, Hera stands out as a unique character in the franchise. She possesses rebellious and tomboyish traits, excelling in activities traditionally seen as masculine, such as riding and warfare.
Upon seeing Hera riding a magnificent white horse (a reference to LOTR) and potentially taming a colossal white eagle, the captivating visuals have left us yearning for more. The inclusion of creatures such as mammoths in the battle only heightens our anticipation.
4. Will we see any familiar Lord of the Rings characters?
The War of the Rohirrim took place in a distant past, making it extremely challenging for characters to travel back in time and be a part of it. The events in the story occurred 250 years prior to the events of the Two Towers, suggesting that the characters involved had not even been born yet, possibly not even their great-great-great grandfather.
Although the events of the movie take place long before the time of Aragorn and Frodo, they will not make an appearance. However, the elven characters, who possess incredibly long lifespans, are still present. Due to the nature of the conflict being between men, it is improbable that Legolas and Elrond will intervene.
Despite the elves’ lack of concern for the war, there is still a chance that Gandalf may appear in the movie with some luck. As he understands the importance of saving Rohan from ruin, it is possible that the only familiar character we see will be the narrator, Otto’s Éowyn. Despite these uncertainties, we can still hold onto hope and keep our fingers crossed for Gandalf’s appearance.
