Kim So-yeon, known for her captivating performances in hit dramas such as “Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938” and the “Penthouse” series, is generating buzz with her upcoming project. The talented actress expressed her gratitude for the affection she’s received for portraying strong characters. However, she emphasized her desire to challenge herself by exploring different genres and roles. “I want to try more subtle acting, delve into comedy, and even redefine my established image,” Kim So-yeon stated.
This unique premise allowed Kim So-yeon to satisfy her craving for a change. “I was instantly attracted to the role of Han Jung-sook in ‘A Virtuous Business’ because I felt it offered me a chance to showcase everything through her character,” she shared.
Initially, Kim So-yeon had reservations about the unconventional subject matter. She recounted, “At first, I wondered, ‘Can a drama about selling adult products really resonate?’ But my curiosity about what they would actually be selling sparked my interest.” After going through the script, she found it significant that “A Virtuous Business” confronted a once-taboo topic and noted, “The way the subject of ‘sex’ is portrayed is crucial; I found it appealing that this drama presents it in a relatable and light-hearted manner.”
Portraying a character from the 90s also offered Kim So-yeon a refreshing experience. “It’s a decade I know well, but the adult world was something I was too young to grasp back then, making it feel new and exciting,” she remarked. She expressed her anticipation for how various generations—those who were young adults in the 90s, children at that time, and today’s youth—will engage with the drama from diverse viewpoints.
In “A Virtuous Business,” Kim So-yeon’s character, Han Jung-sook, lives a humble and principled life until she embarks on a journey selling adult products, marking a pivotal moment in her story. Although she starts a job that was once seen as uncomfortable, she gradually finds purpose in her work and ultimately fulfills her aspirations. Kim So-yeon resonated with Jung-sook’s authenticity, commenting, “Even though she makes endearing mistakes, her sincerity makes her a successful salesperson, and I wanted to root for her.”
To portray such a fascinating character, Kim So-yeon dedicated herself to her performance. “I’ve been meticulously researching and working to ensure that Jung-sook’s movements and dialogue while selling adult products come across as genuine without being exaggerated, evoking imagination in a playful, comfortable way,” she detailed. She particularly focused on the pivotal scene of the first sale, aiming to convey Jung-sook’s nervousness while also injecting humor into the moment. Kim So-yeon shared, “I was so engrossed that I became ill after filming,” illustrating her commitment to the role.
As the drama also emphasizes the dynamic friendship between the four “Bangpan Sisters,” Kim So-yeon reflected on her special connection with co-stars Kim Sung-ryung, Kim Sun-young, and Lee Se-hee. “When we’re on set, we talk endlessly, and I genuinely look forward to our shoot days together,” she noted, highlighting the natural chemistry they share. She confidently remarked, “It feels so real that sometimes it’s hard to distinguish between what’s drama and what’s real life. I believe viewers will feel that authenticity too.”
