Summary of Uzumaki Episode 3

In the previous episode, Kirie was taken to Kurouzu Hospital, sharing a room with her cousin Keiko, who was pregnant, alongside other expectant mothers who had been bitten by mosquitoes.

That same night, Kirie observed the pregnant women congregating in other patients’ rooms, where they drilled into the patients’ bodies to extract blood. When they noticed Kirie watching, they tried to attack her, but she defended herself with mosquito repellent left by Shuichi.

Despite her reports of the odd incident, no one believed her. A few days later, Kirie noticed newborns communicating and a peculiar mushroom growing from their stomachs, which was being consumed by patients, leading to an obsession.

Eventually, Kirie learned that the mushrooms were actually the reincarnated placentas of the newborns who wanted to reunite with their mothers, a situation facilitated by a doctor performing surgeries on the new mothers.

The doctor attempted to restrain Kirie to feed her blood to the mothers, but Keiko intervened and consumed the doctor’s blood instead. Meanwhile, Shuichi’s mother, plagued by paranoia, became fatal while trying to rid herself of a spiral in her ear.

Upon returning home, Kirie discovered her father obsessively crafting spiral-shaped utensils using mud from Dragonfly Pond. One evening, Shuichi heard strange voices emanating from Kirie’s father’s kiln, breaking it open and releasing the spirits of his parents and others.

The episode culminated with a typhoon resting over Kirie’s house, seemingly calling out to her. Shuichi hurried Kirie away, revealing that the typhoon was fixated on her. The storm ultimately descended upon Dragonfly Pond.

After the storm’s destruction, Kirie and her family sought shelter in an old row house, where a tenant nearby developed a disturbing fascination with her, leading to spiraling thorns adorning his body. He breached the wall to pursue Kirie.

Kirie fled, only to encounter Mitsuru’s corpse, which was bouncing unnaturally. As it disintegrated, a suspension spring was discovered lodged inside.

In the much-anticipated Uzumaki episode 4, audiences will witness the spiral curse crescendo into its most terrifying form. With liberties taken by the creators thus far, it will indeed be fascinating to see their interpretation of the final chapters from Junji Ito’s famed work.

Numerous chapters remain for adaptation. If the pacing is off, the finale could fail to deliver the same emotional resonance experienced by manga readers.
