“It is not surprising that Borderlands has failed at the box office, but what was unexpected is the successful return of a different movie 15 years later.”
Despite being the most highly anticipated superhero movie of the summer, Borderlands has failed to live up to expectations, much like the final season of Game of Thrones. The only exception being Deadpool & Wolverine.
Despite receiving a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes upon its debut, the reactions from both critics and fans have not improved. In our three-star review of Borderlands, we noted that the film does not follow the same storyline as the 2009 Pandora and viewers must accept this in order to appreciate it.
Nevertheless, Borderlands has perhaps experienced another humiliating setback, this time from an unexpected origin. The re-release of Coraline from 2009 premiered in theaters this past weekend and surpassed the earnings of Eli Roth’s film adaptation.
According to reports from the box office release, the re-release of the film generated $11.31 million in its first weekend, matching its earnings from 2009.
In comparison to Borderlands, the new movie did not fare as well. Its second weekend brought in $2.35 million, following its opening weekend of $8.6 million.
It should be noted that Borderlands had a budget of approximately $120 million to $130 million, in addition to an estimated $30 million spent on advertising.
Coraline is making a comeback in 3D and is even more impressive than before. If you don’t recall being scared by it as a child, the animated film tells the story of Coraline (Dakota Fanning) who discovers a mysterious tunnel in her new home that leads to an alternate version of her life, complete with her “other mother”(Teri Hatcher).
“The recent success of Coraline, which ranked in the top 5 for domestic box office this weekend, along with other animated films this year, is a clear indication that audiences value animation. It is important for studios to recognize that they cannot compromise on the quality of their staff and their pay,”a fan expressed on X/Twitter.
Another individual concurred that the film is “still one of the most intricately made stop motion movies to date.”
“I have a deep appreciation for 3D movies and will watch any that comes my way. However, even 15 years after its release, Coraline still stands out. One person on Twitter expressed their admiration for this exceptional film that deserves to be viewed in its intended 3D format.”
