Sometimes Trials in Pokémon Go can lead to very strange results – as one player discovered when trying to win with their Rayquaza.
Have you ever participated in an Event in Pokémon Go? These fun events pit different Pokémon against each other at PokéStops, and they’re a great way to get some cool rewards.
They can seem a bit illogical at times, as some Pokémon that seem like clear winners often find themselves losing to unlikely underdogs. This was the case for a Pokémon Go player who recently tried to win a Buddy Challenge with his Rayquaza.

Originally shared in this Reddit post, Pokémon Go player Jlinnenkamp20 found himself confused by how Buddy Trial points are calculated in the game. He posted a screenshot of his gameplay on r/TheSilphRoad, asking other players “how the hell are points calculated for this Trial?”

If you’re not familiar with Trials, the winning Pokémon is the largest Pokémon. It’s important to note that this is relative to the average size of that species’ Pokémon – which is why Jlinnenkamp20’s Rayquaza can be seen losing to a Magikarp and a Prismillon.
This seems ridiculous, because Rayquaza is a huge Pokémon compared to a moth and a goldfish. The results simply mean that the featured Magikarp and Prismillon are considered large for their species.
The responses to this post were full of other Pokémon Go players sharing similar experiences, with one player noting that their Regigigas lost to a Hoopa in a recent Event.
Another compared it to the Bug Catching Contest of the Gold and Silver era, saying you could “catch Scarabrute/Scarhino/Scarhino and lose to a Chenipan/Aspicot” in some cases.
One person in the responses complained that the Trials were boring, with another player saying “I have to disagree, seeing Rayquaza get beaten by Prismillon and Magikarp is so funny”in response. Trials are a good idea in principle, but they aren’t always known for being super logical.
Something helpful that came up in the responses was this explanation of how Super Buddy Trials work. This goes over the different entry requirements and how points are calculated, as well as a handy score calculator.
