This well-known phrase from “Gossip Girl”has been adopted in a variety of works, including those of Korean origin. Its appeal may lie in the provocative image of a woman boldly labeling herself as “crazy”. Viewers of “Gossip Girl”, in which wealthy high school students navigate intense drama, would recognize the message conveyed by this line: having just one wild woman in a group is sufficient.
Despite the abundance of eccentric female characters in the drama “The Frog”, one stands out as seemingly ordinary. This woman holds a stable job, has a happy family, and is even expecting a child. However, when faced with a female serial killer, a crime-obsessed policewoman, and a mentally unstable character, she becomes the unlikely hero who stands up against the killer. So, what is the truth behind this mysterious character in “The Frog”?
A Pregnant Woman Who Shows “True Madness”
“The thriller “The Frog”follows the story of Jeon Yeong-ha (played by Kim Yoon-seok), the owner of a remote forest pension, who crosses paths with the enigmatic killer Yoo Seong-a (played by Go Min-si). The narrative jumps between past and present, leaving viewers perplexed as they try to decipher the characters’ ambiguous intentions. Numerous viewers have expressed, “I am completely lost midway through the series.”
Additionally, the character Seong-a, who is expected to dominate others with her intense madness, ends up being quite uninteresting. At first, she is portrayed as someone who impulsively kills others, but it is later revealed that she is a wealthy and privileged individual who uses her father’s connections to sell her artwork and hire top-notch lawyers after committing murder. This portrayal shifts the focus onto the people around her, making them appear to be victims of her entitled outbursts rather than being truly overwhelmed by a madwoman.
Surprisingly, it is Seong-a’s polar opposite, Jeon Eui-seon (played by Roh Yoon-seo), who captures the attention of viewers. Eui-seon is initially portrayed as an unremarkable and harmless individual. She leads a simple life as a pregnant pharmacist, often visiting her father’s pension with her in-laws. Unaware of Seong-a’s unstable nature, Eui-seon unknowingly invites her to the pension, where Seong-a’s manic behavior leads to a brutal fight with Yeong-ha and multiple deaths in an attempt to claim the property.
Despite the efforts of Yeong-ha, the police, and Seong-a’s father, it is ultimately Eui-seon who manages to subdue Seong-a. Concerned about her father’s lack of communication, Eui-seon goes to the pension and finds herself alone with Seong-a. Despite Seong-a’s attempts to provoke her, Eui-seon remains composed and unaffected. Even when Seong-a reveals their supposed involvement in a murder, Eui-seon simply responds sarcastically, saying, “That’s interesting,”and suggests getting her some medicine and referring her to a psychiatrist as she is a pharmacist.
Despite Seong-a’s cunning strength and attempts to overpower Eui-seon, who is pregnant, Eui-seon is able to read Seong-a’s moves and expertly counter her. If Seong-a had not resorted to a final underhanded tactic, Eui-seon would have emerged victorious in that scene.
Despite the common portrayal of pregnant women as gentle and kind in media, Eui-seon breaks this stereotype by being depicted as a strong character who can stand up against a killer. This unique portrayal resonated with viewers, leading to significant reactions. Viewers commented on how they had never seen a pregnant character portrayed in this way before, with some even noting Eui-seon’s strength as being greater than that of the killer. Many viewers also compared Eui-seon’s character to that of Seong-a, who represents “fake madness”, and hailed Eui-seon as embodying “true madness”. This resulted in an influx of comments flooding in.
