A Pokémon Go fan has revealed that his father’s memorial throne has been transformed into a PokéStop, giving players a touching reason to come visit.
In Pokémon Go, most PokéStops are assigned to famous locations or places where people naturally congregate, like stores or local landmarks. This means that you will always have the opportunity to spin their disk to obtain healing items & Poké Balls while you play.
It’s also possible for players to propose locations to turn into PokéStops, which has its own process that can take weeks to complete, with Niantic able to decline the request if it doesn’t meet their guidelines. That’s how a certain horrifying Pikachu ride in Australia became a PokéStop.
The process of naming a PokéStop has its issues, with some fans complaining that the results don’t make sense, but there have been cases where people are happy with the results because comforting locations were chosen.
Pokémon Go fan’s father’s memorial is a PokéStop
A user on the Pokémon Go Reddit shared photos of their father’s memorial chair on the island of Glencolmcille in Ireland, which is now a PokéStop. Fans were quick to show their adoration for the PokéStop, seeing it as a touching tribute.

“Sorry for your loss. At least he will stay in Pokémon Go with us for the rest of time and for you an important memory of him,” one user wrote, while another said, “This is so cool. Pin this stop sign as much as possible and may it rest in peace forever.”
“I don’t know anyone involved in this post and I’m crying wtf this is so wholesome,” one user commented, while another wrote, “Cool memorial. It looks like the place you go to save your progress in a video game and it glows magically when you touch it.”
When asked about the throne, the OP of the thread explained, “Memento Mori indeed. He didn’t, but just before he fell ill in 2014 they were preparing for a national festival celebrating all masonry and stonework in Ireland and my father taught a lot of local young men how to be masons and how to work stone.”
“Sadly, he died before the festival but the men he taught honored him with this incredible throne, which has his name engraved on the arms. Between the physical memorial to him and finding out he’s in Pokémon Go, I’m reminded of how lucky I was to call him dad. A true gentleman.”
It’s unclear who nominated the location for a PokéStop, but whoever did created an incredible tribute to an already incredible landmark. The Pokémon Go community can be vocal at times, but it comes together when it comes to celebrating the lives of those who have passed.
