During IFA, Acer unveiled a unique idea for a gaming laptop that includes a built-in controller and detachable speakers.
Despite the loyalty of many PC gaming enthusiasts to using a keyboard and mouse for control, a significant number of players still opt for an actual controller. This preference has been further reinforced by the popularity of the Steam Deck and the availability of high-quality third-party controllers for PC.
It seems that Acer has acknowledged this demand and showcased a distinctive hybrid laptop, named Project DualPlay, at the IFA Berlin event.
The laptop design includes a detachable controller that can be split into two separate parts, similar to the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons, allowing for multiplayer functionality.
The controller is attached to the laptop, taking the place of the touchpad and secured with a magnetic locking system. By simply using two fingers, the lock can be disengaged and two 5W speakers will appear on each side.
Acer has yet to reveal the specific specifications of their conceptual machine, however according to Videocardz, the company has stated that the laptop will be capable of supporting ‘AAA gaming on the go’. They specifically mentioned Street Fighter 6 as a game that can be played with the dual controller set-up.
To accommodate the advanced controller mechanism, Acer made adjustments to the internal design of the laptop. This resulted in reduced space for a larger battery and an active cooling solution, raising concerns about the device’s ability to handle high-end gaming.
While this is simply a concept and may never make it to the market, it serves to showcase the abilities of the Acer engineering team and to speculate on potential trends for future gaming laptops. The goal is not to produce a product for store shelves, but rather to demonstrate the potential capabilities in the gaming laptop industry.
