Emergency shifts function as their name suggests. They allow specific buildings to work overtime and produce more resources. For instance, when an Industrial District is set to manufacture goods and you trigger the emergency shift, it will yield a higher production rate in the same timeframe. To activate an emergency shift, select any district to bring up its information window. There will be an emergency shift button located beneath the efficiency slider, which you need to press for every individual district manually.

However, there are consequences to implementing emergency shifts. Overworking your population or workforce can lead to sickness and potential death if their work-life balance remains unaddressed. This is particularly critical given the harsh conditions of the environment. If you neglect essential needs for your citizens awhile continuously overworking them, you risk losing some of your population.

If you ensure that all critical needs for survival are met while utilizing emergency shifts, mortality rates will decrease, though sickness may still occur. Nonetheless, the primary drawback of emergency shifts is the erosion of trust. Even with a thriving and self-sufficient city, a loss of trust among your citizens can lead to exile and potential defeat in the game.

While emergency shifts have a limited effect on trust or loyalty, the negative impact accumulates if you repeatedly employ them across all your districts.

The primary situation warranting the use of emergency shifts is when an immediate change is necessary in the production of goods, items, and resources within your city. If you unexpectedly deplete natural resources you’re reliant on, your stockpile may dwindle quickly, leaving you insufficient time to bolster production in alternative extraction districts. The only viable temporary solution is the activation of emergency shifts, which can boost production output by approximately 20-25%.

If the lacking resources pertain to essentials like food or heating, prioritize these concerns above all else. If a solution remains elusive, consider employing emergency shifts to “temporarily” rectify the situation using this feature.
