Reports have revealed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 provides players with numerous customization choices, including purchasable Operator skins and bundles. It has been stated that AI tools are being utilized in the production of some of these options.
The WIRED magazine from the United States released an article stating that Activision has been implementing AI into their game development procedures since the spring of 2023. This has been most evident in the creation of concept art and marketing materials.
According to the report, players of MW3 were offered an AI-generated bundle for purchase in late 2023. While WIRED did not specify the exact cosmetic available, they did mention the Yokai’s Wrath bundle, which had been launched in December 2023.

This indicates that it was created with the help of AI technology, although the specific aspect of the bundle that was influenced by AI is not specified. The bundle includes an Operator skin, Weapon Blueprint, Weapon Sticker, Calling Card, and Loading Screen.
After the release of the MW3 bundle, Microsoft made the decision to lay off approximately 1,900 employees from Activision Blizzard and Xbox. According to a report, a significant number of these employees were 2D artists. A source who wished to remain anonymous revealed to WIRED that following the layoffs, the remaining employees were compelled to rely on artificial intelligence to assist with their tasks.
These employees were also required to participate in “AI trainings”and there have been reports of them receiving promotions throughout the entire organization.
The use of AI in Call of Duty seems to be a permanent addition, as evidenced by a recent Treyarch job listing for an art position that required advanced expertise in working with generative AI tools. This sparked outrage and disappointment within the community, as seen in tweets such as those from @FromHappyRock and @GenelJumalon.
Although the project remains ambiguous, given that Activision has utilized generative tools in 2023, it is highly likely that AI was incorporated in the development of Black Ops 6, scheduled for release on October 25.
WIRED’s investigation doesn’t just focus on Activision’s use of AI; it also includes Riot Games, the development studio responsible for League of Legends and Valorant.
