Actor Byeon Woo-seok, who is currently starring in tvN’s Monday-Tuesday drama “Lovely Runner”at the height of his career, has been gaining notoriety for the recurring theme of his characters meeting untimely ends in his recent works. This unique pattern has led to him being referred to as “the next Kim Kap-soo”and “specialist in death roles”.
This trend was initiated by the movie “20th Century Girl”from Netflix. Byeon Woo-seok portrayed the character of Poong Woon-ho, a classmate of Na Bo-ra (Kim Yoo-jung) and a member of the broadcasting club in this 2022 film. Woon-ho, who was the best friend of Baek Hyun-jin (Park Jung-woo), fell in love with Bo-ra. Unfortunately, the tragic demise of Woon-ho in New Zealand left fans shocked and heartbroken.
In JTBC’s “Strong Girl Nam-soon” , Byeon Woo-seok’s character, Ryu Shi-oh, meets a tragic fate as the villain. As the CEO of the distribution and sales company “Doogo”, Ryu Shi-oh is entangled in the illegal trade of drugs. When his wicked actions are exposed and he faces the risk of being arrested by the police, he chooses to end his life with a gunshot, ultimately providing a resolution of “good conquers evil”.
In the hit tvN drama “Lovely Runner”, Byeon Woo-seok rose to fame through his role as Ryu Seon-jae. Before the series finale, his character had already faced death. This fantasy youth romance depicts the story of Seon-jae, a popular idol who died under mysterious circumstances, and Im Sol (Kim Hye-yoon), a devoted fan who is deeply affected by his passing. Through a twist of fate, Im Sol is given the opportunity to travel back in time and prevent Seon-jae’s death, as well as her own potential crisis.
The time slip element results in Seon-jae facing death three times and falling into a coma once.
