Jenna Ortega has recently addressed the controversial sex scene she filmed with Martin Freeman in Miller’s Girl for the first time.
Despite beginning her career with family-oriented projects, Jenna Ortega has gradually shifted towards more mature roles, including her lead roles in various Scream movies, the gothic series Wednesday, and the film Miller’s Girl.
The plot of the erotic thriller centers on a high school student (Ortega) who attempts to initiate a romantic relationship with her teacher (Freeman). The two experience numerous unsettling moments throughout the film, including a controversial sex scene that garnered significant attention.
Despite confusion over the scene’s presence, Ortega clarified to Vanity Fair the necessity of its inclusion, stating, “The film is not meant to be enjoyable. It is meant to be uncomfortable at times.”
She persisted, stating that art does not always intend to bring about pleasant or joyful feelings, nor does it always conclude with everyone happily riding off into the sunset. We all encounter difficult and unpleasant experiences at some point in our lives.
The significant age difference between Freeman, who is 52 years old, and Ortega, 21, was a major concern for many viewers during the intimate moment.
Upon the film’s premiere, Freeman remained composed despite the criticisms, stating in an interview with The Times of London that Miller’s character was portrayed in a “mature and complex”manner.
He emphasized that the movie was not promoting or approving of a power imbalance in relationships, clarifying, “It’s not glorifying the situation. Stories that tackle tough topics can unfortunately be judged unfairly because of their subject matter. That’s unfortunate.”
During an interview with The Daily Mail, Kristina Arjona, the intimacy coordinator for Miller Girl, also shared her thoughts on the subject.
“Throughout this process, there were numerous individuals engaging with [Jenna] to ensure that her comfort was prioritized,”Arjona stated. “Part of my responsibility is to support her decisions and accommodate her comfort level as an actor, especially in a production like this where there is a significant age difference between the performers.”
I am extremely conscious of my abilities and ensuring that we regularly communicate and respect each other’s boundaries. This is especially important when working with someone much younger, and I make sure to obtain continuous consent from them.
Despite Arjona’s reassuring comments, her outspokenness about the events on the Miller’s Girl set prompted SAG-AFTRA to establish new regulations. These rules state that coordinators could face termination if they disclose confidential information without consent.
According to a spokesperson who spoke to Deadline, intimacy coordinators must respect the privacy of actors and their work when it comes to performing delicate scenes. They should only share this information publicly if they have the actor’s consent to do so.
“It is not acceptable for an intimacy coordinator to publicly disclose any details about an actor’s scene work or private information without the performer’s consent.”
