Adorable McDonald’s Japan x Studio Ghibli ad has fans going wild

McDonald’s Japan has once again released a heartwarming animated advertisement, this time garnering immense excitement from Studio Ghibli fans.

The marketing team at McDonald’s Japan is well-versed in creating viral content. In the past year, their official account gained attention for sharing animated videos of a family enjoying a meal together, as well as a charming portrayal of an awkward yet endearing first date.

The two videos became instant hits, garnering millions of views and inspiring fan art from dedicated followers. McDonald’s Japan is renowned for its numerous collaborations with anime, partnering with popular franchises such as Pokemon and Detective Conan.

Despite this, the latest collaboration has garnered significant attention from the Studio Ghibli community, resulting in many individuals turning to social media to express their admiration for the new ad.

On June 17, 2024, the official McDonald’s Japan X account shared a silhouette of Kiki, the young witch from Kiki’s Delivery Service. The short video was accompanied by the question, “Can you guess who this is?”

The Studio Ghibli fans’ post received immediate attention, with many commenting to express their enthusiasm for a possible collaboration. Their wait was short-lived, as McDonald’s Japan uploaded three additional clips just one day after the initial post.

In the initial scene, we witness Kiki soaring through the sky on her broom with her loyal black cat Jiji by her side – once again, clinging on for dear life. Kiki’s iconic radio is also attached to her broom, with a McDonald’s meal dangling nearby.

The upcoming video features Kiki carrying out errands along the stunning streets of Koriko, the central location in Miyazaki’s renowned film. This is succeeded by the third and final video, which captures the breathtaking sunset over Koriko as Kiki and Jiji make their way back home.

Fans of Studio Ghibli were ecstatic when news of an “unexpected”crossover involving the beloved little witch was announced. Many expressed their joy at the thought of Kiki and Jiji from Kiki’s Delivery Service delivering McDonald’s straight to their doorsteps, with one commenter stating that it would bring immense happiness to children.

Additionally, some were eager to take advantage of the “delivery”aspect of Kiki Delivery Service. One user even joked, “Can you deliver my Mac? It’s perfect for Kiki’s Delivery Service!”

It is uncertain if there will be any Kiki’s Delivery Service-themed menu items, but McDonald’s Japan has certainly infused some enchantment into their newest videos.
