Aegon’s Conquest spinoff to Avoid House of the Dragon ‘mistake’

Aegon’s Conquest spinoff to Avoid House of the Dragon ‘mistake’

The upcoming Game of Thrones spinoff, Aegon’s Conquest, has generated a lot of excitement among fans. It will follow the legendary Targaryen conqueror’s story, but there are concerns that it may repeat the same ‘mistake’ as House of the Dragon.

Undoubtedly, one of the most significant events in George R.R. Martin’s epic tale of ice and fire is the unification of the Seven Kingdoms under the rule of Aegon I, a Targaryen king who compelled the realms to swear allegiance.

The mention of his name in House of the Dragon has sparked interest; the skull of his dragon, Balerion, the most fearsome and largest of its kind in Westeros’ history, has been revealed. The confusion surrounding the Dance of the Dragons was caused by the fact that Viserys’ son shares the same name.

In the near future (possibly in a few years), the Aegon’s Conquest story will come to screen in a new television series. The show is currently in development by Mattson Tomlin, known for co-writing The Batman and heading Netflix’s Terminator Zero anime series.

Following House of the Dragon’s revelation of the true motivation behind his conquest (a vision of the White Walkers and the belief that a Targaryen must rule the Iron Throne for the sake of the world’s survival), it seems that the series will continue to “interpret”the source material in a similar fashion.

Questioning Tomlin, Westerosies (via Nexus Point News) inquired about his approach to the story.

“It all began with George’s actions. I have had the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time with him, and there have been numerous moments where I have had to pinch myself while delving into the intense and violent scenes, highlighting passages and asking for clarification on their meaning. I have been constantly questioning him, trying to decipher what I believe the intended message to be.”

Sometimes, I would really press him and say, “I don’t understand what’s going on here.”Other times, I would suggest, “I think it could possibly mean this.”My approach was to treat the text as if it were a true historical account. Fire and Blood is written in a way that makes it feel like real events occurred.

Although we have extensive knowledge about Alexander the Great and Napoleon, including their battles and the individuals who perished, there are still gaps in our understanding. While we may have some accounts of their words and actions, there is much that remains unknown. We can use certain key events as markers in their histories, but our understanding is not complete.

And that is also another factor to consider.”

Although Aegon’s Conquest is a significant event in Fire and Blood, it only spans less than 30 pages. This alone is not sufficient material for a TV show.

“To me, it is essential to uphold both George’s vision and the text’s integrity. Additionally, the story must be gripping and compelling. The characters must embark on a transformational journey from start to finish.”

Interpreting the clues left in the textbook, I strive to create a vivid show that accurately portrays the real history. My goal is to make a production that will be well-received and not disliked, putting my best effort into it.

This is comparable to Ryan Condal’s strategy for House of the Dragon, which faced unwarranted criticism for several of its choices in Season 2, particularly concerning Alicent’s storyline.

“Some users expressed doubt, with one writing, “Yeah… we’ll see. It seems like the HOTD writers are saying the same thing. We know how that turned out.”Another commented, “Looks like it’s time to throw in the towel. The show should be cancelled and the writing should stop. It’s just going to be another HOTD disaster.”

“According to the HOTD writers, this upcoming project is going to be a disaster. Many fans are concerned and have expressed their opinions, with one saying, ‘If they alter any details about Aegon The Conquerer, I will personally set fire to HBO’s building.’”

While some fans may believe that altering Martin’s source material is a mistake, it’s important to remember two key points. Firstly, a TV show exists in its own separate continuity, allowing the book canon to remain intact. Secondly, as an adaptation, it has the flexibility to make necessary changes in order to provide entertaining and captivating television.
