aespa’s “Whiplash” Stirs Controversy: Is It Criticism of HYBE or Imitation of BLACKPINK?

On October 21, aespa made a striking comeback with their fifth mini-album titled “Whiplash,”featuring the title track of the same name.

The new song continues aespa’s impressive run following their hit “Supernova.”Interestingly, an SM director labeled the track as “divisive,” and his forecast has indeed proven to be accurate, although for unforeseen reasons.

Particularly, the lyrics of “Whiplash”are under scrutiny for allegedly “throwing shade” at HYBE, while the music video has faced accusations of “imitating BLACKPINK.”

Specifically, the line “Cats gon’ copy one idea, two, then the whole look, then deny it” has sparked speculation that it targets those who attempt to replicate aespa’s achievements, especially HYBE, which had previously indicated intentions to “trample on aespa.”

Comments circulating online include remarks like “The HYBE shade is so real, aespa,” “They ate,” and “Them casually ending HYBE has me cracking up,” reflecting the buzz around the lyrics.

A user also noted, “aespa’s remarks in ‘Whiplash’ showcase their awareness of their influence in the industry, pointing out how others may try to mimic their style without giving credit. This confidence enhances their artistry and emphasizes the originality of their music.”

Meanwhile, as the lyrics gain popularity, comparisons to BLACKPINK’s aesthetics and music videos have emerged, with some suggesting that aespa’s claims of copying are “coming from inside the house” and alleging that aespa has appropriated BLACKPINK’s signature style.

Conversely, some users have come to aespa’s defense against such criticism, claiming that those who see similarities between the two girl groups are “both blind and deaf.”
