Agatha All Along may only have aired three episodes so far, but it has already broken two significant records in Marvel television history.
This new Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) TV series is a spinoff of the 2021 hit WandaVision, leading many to question whether it could compete with other popular Disney+ shows like Loki and Ms. Marvel.
However, Agatha All Along has managed to silence its critics by achieving remarkable success, officially surpassing two records set by earlier Marvel series.
As of September 26, 2024, Agatha All Along garnered 9.3 million views in its debut week on Disney+, outpacing most of its competitors significantly.
While the spinoff fell short of Loki Season 2’s premiere figure of 10.9 million views, it has surpassed the viewership of 2024’s Echo, securing the second spot in viewership records.
Viewership is not the only achievement Agatha All Along has reached; The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that it is currently Marvel’s “least expensive live-action series to date.”
Agatha All Along now holds this title, replacing Echo, with a production budget of only $40 million for its five-episode run.
The reduced budget for the spinoff could be attributed to its simpler set designs and a preference for practical effects over expensive visual effects (VFX).
While the series centers around Agatha and her coven of witches, it has not yet featured many extravagant magical confrontations.
This contrasts sharply with its predecessor WandaVision, which utilized numerous VFX to showcase Wanda’s powers, especially during the climactic battle between the Scarlet Witch and Agatha.
Agatha All Along demonstrates how a series can achieve great storytelling without a massive budget. The creative team has revealed that the eerie physical transformations seen in Episode 3 resulted from prosthetics makeup rather than CGI.
This witchy series might be the key for Marvel to produce high-quality television while managing costs, all while winning the appreciation of viewers.
Episodes 1-3 of Agatha All Along are currently available for streaming on Disney Plus.
