At the conclusion of Episode 7 of *Agatha All Along*, viewers uncover the true persona of Rio Vidal, the show’s Original Green Witch – she has been Lady Death all along.
Unless you encountered a Funko Pop that gave it away, Rio (portrayed by Aubrey Plaza) stands out as one of the most enigmatic figures in the Marvel series. This is largely because, unlike the other members of Agatha’s coven, her character doesn’t have a counterpart in the comics.
During Agatha’s trial, the coven utilized a Ouija board that spelled out “Death.”While this amused Rio, what we didn’t realize is that she has been one of the mightiest entities within the Marvel universe throughout the series.
Although hints have been sprinkled throughout the episodes, Episode 7 illuminates Rio’s true identity, especially as another witch meets her tragic fate.
Rio Vidal Revealed as Lady Death in *Agatha All Along*
At the culmination of her journey in *Agatha All Along*, it becomes clear that only one being awaits Lilia: Death itself, a presence as unavoidable as life itself.
This particular episode primarily focuses on Lilia’s struggle to reconcile her past, present, and future, as she experiences her life in a nonlinear fashion while attempting to navigate the trial to save Wanda, Billy, and Jennifer.
As she confides in Jennifer, Lilia feels she has reached the conclusion of her journey – not just along the Witch’s Road but in her life. As this realization settles in, Rio intonates, “All roads lead to me.”
To heighten the tension, Lady Death emerges from the shadows, sporting a half-skull visage. “Who is that?” Lilia inquires. “Don’t you recognize me, Lilia?” Rio replies, affirming her identity as Death.
Understanding Death in the Marvel Universe
In the comics, Lady Death is the embodiment of Death itself, regarded as the “antagonist” of life. Nevertheless, similar to her brother Eternity (who made an appearance in *Thor: Love and Thunder*), she plays a fundamental role in maintaining cosmic equilibrium.
Her origin story is captivating. She was birthed during the Big Bang alongside Eternity, Infinity (don’t ask for specifics of their distinctions), Master Order, and Lord Chaos, and made her home in the Realm of Death.
Her narrative includes wild encounters: Thor once faced an ancient woman named Elli in combat, who turned out to be Death in disguise; Deadpool became infatuated with her after a near-death experience; Eternity once seized her, inadvertently granting immortality to all creatures; and she even inspired the Scarlet Spider to seek redemption.
Notably, the character has a significant relationship with Thanos. In the MCU, he wielded the Infinity Gauntlet to resolve the universe’s overpopulation issue to avert widespread hunger – a motive some might consider noble.
Conversely, the comics portray a different scenario. Thanos first encountered Death as a youngster, leading him to embrace his darker instincts. Despite his attempts to win her affection through violence (including the murder of his own mother) and the destruction of worlds, she continually rebuffed him.
To prove his love, Thanos gathered the Infinity Stones and eradicated half of all living creatures. However, this only alienated her further; using the gauntlet, he might have eclipsed her power. Ultimately, she aided in his downfall, with Nebula reclaiming the gauntlet to reverse his devastation.
Powers and Abilities of Lady Death
Lady Death possesses seemingly limitless powers: her omnipotence allows her to manipulate time, space, matter, reality, and energy at will, along with commanding the souls of those around her.
In essence, she holds the capability to end lives or restore them at her discretion.
Marvel elaborates that she has a “functionally limitless amount of power to operate with [and] can pose a Multiversal threat, but she primarily acts as more of a universal constant than a malevolent presence.”
Is Lady Death Capable of Dying?
Death can be erased (in a manner of speaking), yet such an event would lead to disastrous repercussions across all existences.
For instance, during *Secret Wars II*, the Beyonder attempted to eliminate Death from existence to ensure no further deaths occurred. This decision swiftly backfired when he recognized Death’s role as a necessary balance, compelling him to restore her.
However, the concept of Death’s demise is complex and remains ambiguously defined. As Marvel emphasizes, “any framework of physicality, emotions, or mortal limitations linked to Death remains purely mortal to comprehend the entity.”
