On the 30th, Winter responded to inquiries about the trending AI covers in a live broadcast. Playfully remarking, “AI isn’t all that great,”she proceeded to volunteer to sing a variety of songs including “West Sky”by Lee Seung-chul, “I Don’t Love You”by Baek Ji-young, “On Rainy Days”by Beast, “Good Day”by IU, “Eyes, Nose, Lips”by Taeyang, “Mirotic”by TVXQ, and “Two X”by Taeyeon.
In recent times, there has been a rise in the popularity of AI-generated renditions of songs, where the AI technology imitates the voice of a singer. Some notable examples of this trend include AI versions of NewJeans’ “Hype Boy” by an AI Bruno Mars, IU’s “Good Day”by an AI Im Jae-bum, and “Bam Yanggang”by an AI IU. These versions have caught the attention of many due to their ability to closely resemble the original songs.
Nonetheless, this type of content sparks debates about copyright and raises concerns about intellectual property and fair compensation, as it often entails the unauthorized use of original artists’ voices and efforts.
Some artists have expressed their discomfort regarding the use of AI voices. Jang Yoon-jung stated in March that if this trend continues, singers may no longer need to record music and AI could be used to sell music instead. Similarly, Park Myung-soo pointed out the potential misuse of AI voices for voice phishing and emphasized the need for measures to address this issue.
Globally, more than 200 renowned artists, such as Billie Eilish and Katy Perry, have endorsed an open letter denouncing the harmful use of AI to manipulate artists’ voices.
Despite the circumstances, Winter’s unwavering stance has left fans stunned. During her live performance, where she displayed her distinct vocal style, she emphasized that “AI cannot imitate an artist’s individual skill and worth,”gaining even more backing.
Winter and Aespa have planned to extend their tour, where they will have the opportunity to meet their fans in 14 different locations throughout Asia and Australia. These locations include Hong Kong, Taipei, Tokyo, Jakarta, Sydney, Melbourne, Macau, and Bangkok, with their final show taking place in Fukuoka, Japan on the 31st.
