Qantas has issued an apology following an incident where an R-rated movie featuring Dakota Johnson was inadvertently screened for all passengers aboard a flight from Sydney to Tokyo.
During the flight to Haneda, the initial scenes of the film “Daddio,”which is explicit in nature and released in 2023, were shown to everyone. This film stars Dakota Johnson alongside Sean Penn.
Rated R in the U.S. for its “language, sexual material, and brief graphic nudity,” the film is classified as MA15+ in Australia due to “strong coarse language and nudity.”
Technical difficulties prevented passengers from choosing their own films, and upon request from some travelers, the crew made the decision to play “Daddio”for the entirety of the flight. Once the audience became aware of the film’s inappropriate content, the crew interrupted the screening and switched to a family-friendly movie.
“It was clear that the movie was unsuitable for the entire flight, and we sincerely apologize for this experience,” stated a Qantas representative in an interview with The Guardian.
“For the rest of the flight, all displays were switched to a more appropriate movie, as is our standard procedure in such rare situations where individual movie selection is compromised. We are currently reviewing how this film selection occurred.”
A user on Reddit reported their experience on the flight, highlighting that the drama featured not only graphic nudity but also extensive sexting that was visible without any audio assistance.
“It continued for nearly an hour before they switched to a more suitable film, and it was extremely uncomfortable for everyone, especially families with children on board,” the post elaborated, providing images of the explicit messages displayed and noting that passengers were unable to pause or turn off their screens.
Qantas confirmed that their crew apologized to affected passengers, especially those who voiced concerns regarding the film’s content, and promised to follow up with them.
