As you venture into the Nahantu region of Diablo 4, the name Akarat will resound frequently. But who exactly is this significant figure within the Vessel of Hatred expansion?
Sanctuary is rich with various religions and cultures, and upon your arrival in Nahantu, it quickly becomes clear that Akarat holds a pivotal position among the Spiritborn and Witch Doctors residing in the area.
While a full exploration of Akarat’s history is not our focus here, we aim to provide a brief overview of this entity and his relevance in the Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred DLC.
Akarat is often depicted as a majestic golden lion.
Understanding Will
Akarat is a name you might recognize from previous Diablo titles, but within Nahantu, his presence is amplified, reflecting his significance to the local culture. He is regarded as a messianic figure who emanates a divine light, which serves to repel the forces of Hell.
In the lore of Diablo, Akarat exists as a godlike being in the Spirit Realm, actively listening to the prayers of his followers who seek his wisdom and protection during trying times.
Encounters with the Angel Yaerius, who bestows part of Heaven’s Light upon Akarat, grant him the power needed to defend Sanctuary against demonic incursions. This partnership led Akarat to establish the Zakarum faith, a precursor to the Cathedral of Light, which eventually honors Inarius.
Upon immersing himself in the local traditions and prophecies heralding his arrival, Akarat confronted Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, who was sent by his brother Diablo to subjugate the land. Akarat triumphantly defeated Mephisto, who was then imprisoned under the temple of Travincal, close to Kurast.
After becoming a revered spiritual guide in Nahantu until his passing, Akarat made preparations to counter any attempts by Mephisto to escape. Following his death from old age, Akarat ascended to the Spirit Realm, where he continues to watch over and protect his followers for centuries.
Akarat’s remains are remarkably preserved within his tomb.
Akarat’s Role in the Diablo Series
In Diablo 2, the demonic brothers Diablo and Baal liberate Mephisto, directing him to assault Nahantu as a diversion against the heroes pursuing them. Mephisto complied, attempting once again to corrupt the resilient land.
Ultimately, the heroes of Diablo 2 succeeded in vanquishing Mephisto, seemingly eliminating his threat to the region. Certain artifacts utilized in this game related back to Akarat and his luminosity and greatly influenced the Paladin order.
However, when Mephisto resurfaces in Nahantu during Diablo 4 (still confined within Neyrelle’s soul stone), he begins to taint the land anew. In response, Akarat takes on a more proactive role, manifesting as a formidable golden lion to assist Neyrelle and the Wanderer in combating Mephisto.
Notably, Akarat’s character draws parallels to religious figures from our own history, sharing themes reminiscent of Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, and Guru Nanak.
