Akutami Shortchanged Yuji’s Fuga in Jujutsu Kaisen: Only a Part 2 Can Remedy This

The story of Jujutsu Kaisen is nearing its conclusion, with only about two chapters remaining. In a grueling and extensive battle that took place in the vibrant district of Shinjuku, Team Jujutsu High successfully defeated the formidable King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna. Victory was hard-won and required the combined efforts of nearly every sorcerer on their side.

The epic clash was masterfully crafted by creator Gege Akutami, who consistently surprised fans as each character showcased their unique skills and creativity throughout the fight. However, there appears to be one significant element that Akutami withheld from the audience: Yuji Itadori’s version of Fuga, or Divine Flames.

Throughout the series, it is established that Yuji Itadori and Ryomen Sukuna have shared a body for an extended duration. Yuji becoming the vessel for Sukuna after ingesting one of his cursed fingers initially thrust him into a chaotic merging of their powers. This arrangement allowed Sukuna to inhabit Yuji’s body and unleash havoc whenever he appeared.

As revealed by Atsuya Kusakabe, this prolonged sharing resulted in Sukuna’s Shrine being imprinted onto Yuji. Consequently, during the latter parts of the Shinjuku Showdown, Yuji showcased his own iterations of Sukuna’s techniques, namely Cleave and Dismantle, much to the astonishment of both the audience and Sukuna himself.

Applying this same logic, one would expect Yuji to also have access to Sukuna’s Fuga or Divine Flames, a powerful technique he first employed against the Disaster Curse Jogo during the Shibuya Incident. He wielded this attack once more, incinerating Choso during the Shinjuku arc. Given that the Shrine was imprinted on Yuji, the expectation for him to harness Fuga seems reasonable.

However, with the calamity now behind them and a period of peace settled in, Akutami might have intentionally refrained from revealing Yuji’s interpretation of Fuga. After the important revelation about the Shrine imprinted on Yuji, there was a prime opportunity for the author to have showcased Yuji unleashing his own version of Fuga to conclude the series. This would have been poignant, especially since Sukuna’s use of Fuga led to Choso’s tragic demise.

Envisioning Yuji deploying Fuga to eliminate Sukuna would not only serve as fitting retribution but might also have brought Yuji peace. Yet, Akutami likely bypassed this opportunity for a purposeful reason, possibly to develop further intrigue or plot points for a potential Jujutsu Kaisen Part II.

In light of the events surrounding the Shinjuku Showdown, the very fabric of the Jujutsu Society has been altered drastically. Additionally, Gojo’s confrontation with high-ranking officials further shakes the foundation of their world. As things settle down, a new generation of sorcerers rises against those who threaten the peace. Hints towards a Part II focusing on this new iteration of the Jujutsu Society are growing stronger, and Yuji may once again find himself at the forefront of these developments.
