Alien: Romulus director didn’t want to make the same mistake as Terminator

Alien: Romulus director didn’t want to make the same mistake as Terminator

It has been a long time since Alien: Covenant, with seven years having passed since its release, and an even longer 45 years since the debut of Ridley Scott’s iconic science fiction film.

Instead of being a direct sequel in the Alien franchise, director Alvarez and his frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues are revisiting the beloved elements of the series in their upcoming film, which is set between Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens.

The filmmaker enjoyed Dark Fate but didn’t want Romulus to be a continuation

Terminator: Dark Fate, released in 2019, marked the end of the action movie franchise but differed from the first (1984) and second (1991) entries by continuing the events of the story.

“I expressed my reluctance for it to be chapter seven, as I believed that the story needed to appeal to a new audience. If we labeled it as part seven or made too many connections to the previous movies, it could end up like Terminator: Dark Fate,”he elaborated.

Although I personally enjoyed it, I could see how a younger audience might become confused by the hype surrounding these individuals.

“When nostalgia kicks in and a 70-year-old character unexpectedly appears, the audience may question why this person is supposed to be considered cool. In response, one must explain, ‘Well, you should recall 1992…’”

“The younger generation is only interested in things that hold personal significance for them.”

Alvarez further expressed his caution in not wanting to “embrace”something that would only appeal to half of the audience.

However, die-hard fans can still look forward to plenty of authenticity and Easter eggs from the franchise, as the filmmaker has promised they will be scattered throughout.

“Whether you’re a fan or not, you will still be able to fully appreciate the movie and its elements,”he concluded.

Clearly, Alvarez was unable to reveal any spoilers, but he assured that the choice to place Alien: Romulus a couple of years after the initial Alien would be logical.

“Additionally, incorporating elements from both Alien and Aliens, this stylistic choice was crucial in creating an authentic feel of the era,”he hinted. He also mentioned that the technology of Aliens will gradually make an appearance throughout the movie.

Mark your calendars for August 16, 2024 when Romulus will make its explosive debut in theaters. In the meantime, discover how to snag the movie’s exclusive popcorn bucket, explore other upcoming horror films to look forward to, and see what movies will be available for streaming this month.
