The tale follows Ranma Saotome as he studies martial arts under the guidance of his father, Genma. Their training takes place in a forbidden area in China, filled with numerous water springs. Accidentally falling into the springs, they discover that the water has caused them to undergo physical transformations.

Upon transformation, Ranma becomes a young girl while his father takes the form of a Panda. It is revealed that hot water is the key to reverting back to their original selves. However, any contact with regular or cold water will result in them returning to their cursed forms.

The story begins with Ranma returning to Japan and moving in with Akane, who he was previously betrothed to at the Tendo Dojo.
