An Awful 2014 Vampire Flick Is Surging Up Netflix’s Top 10 Movies List

Netflix has a history of suddenly catapulting obscure films or TV shows to global fame. Without the help of Netflix’s algorithm, titles like Under Paris or 365 Days would not have gained the same level of attention. This phenomenon has occurred once again, but this time it is for a movie that would have been unlikely to receive such recognition.

Dracula Untold Flies Up the Netflix Top 10

Despite lacking a clear explanation, Dracula Untold, a 2014 remake of the famous vampire narrative featuring Luke Evans in the lead role, currently holds the #3 spot on Netflix’s global movie rankings, according to FlixPatrol.

Looking at the movies listed below, it is difficult to understand why Dracula Untold has gained such popularity. Both Minions: The Rise of Gru and Get Out have earned a higher worldwide gross and IMDb rating than Dracula Untold’s $217 million and 6.2, respectively.

It is possible that Netflix subscribers, with their keen eyes, are using this opportunity to watch a movie that may have slipped past them when it was first released. With top-notch actors like Luke Evans, Dominic Cooper, and Charles Dance, it is no surprise that fantasy enthusiasts would be drawn to it.

Despite this, it is highly probable that the recent surge in popularity for Dracula Untold can be attributed to the failure of one of 2024’s major film releases, Madame Web. This ill-fated Spider-Man spin-off has become a subject of numerous memes due to its notoriety as one of the biggest box office bombs of the year. Significantly, both Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who were the screenwriters for Madame Web, also wrote Dracula Untold, which perhaps explains the similarities in their reception.

While not every Netflix viewer may research a movie’s screenwriters before watching it, it’s interesting to note that Dracula Untold is gaining popularity once again in the same year as Madame Web. It’s uncertain if the 2014 film will become as widely memed, but we’re definitely intrigued.
