Analysis of BLACKPINK’s Reactions to Meeting Seungri

The BBC recently aired a documentary exposing the Burning Sun Scandal, which involved former BIGBANG member Seungri and other K-pop stars as the main culprits. This highly talked about documentary featured previously unreleased videos that revealed the true nature of Seungri and his associates. Despite his conviction and release from prison, Seungri continues to live a lavish lifestyle, despite his dark past as a male idol.

Following the release of the BBC documentary, which sparked renewed criticism, netizens revisited a previous video featuring Seungri playing a prank on members of BLACKPINK. This video was filmed during Seungri’s time as a YG idol, when BLACKPINK was still a newly debuted group.

Throughout their early days as a group, the members of BLACKPINK were frequently seen interacting with senior idols such as BIGBANG. Seungri, in particular, made appearances on entertainment programs with BLACKPINK and even guested at one of their concerts. Additionally, Jennie was featured in Seungri’s solo track “GG Be”. However, fans began to notice the uncomfortable expressions of BLACKPINK members whenever they encountered Seungri, despite their frequent interactions.

During filming, Seungri was given a task to play a prank on BLACKPINK. He initially greeted the members in the YG building’s hallway as usual. Then, the two men accompanying Seungri requested autographs from BLACKPINK. One of the men suddenly removed his shirt, revealing a back covered in tattoos, which frightened the four girls. Seungri quickly intervened to diffuse the situation for them.

Upon viewing the video, BLACKPINK fans were filled with anger, particularly following the exposure of the Burning Sun Scandal. Numerous individuals condemned the man’s actions as sexual harassment.

Furthermore, in the following scene, Seungri proceeded to take on another task, which involved inviting BLACKPINK to a company gathering. However, upon receiving the invitation, the eldest member Jisoo declined, citing a prior commitment to shooting a music video. Seungri then turned to Jennie and inquired, “Would you like to join us?”. With a serious expression, Jennie firmly responded, “No”.

After that, Seungri handed out vouchers for his ramen restaurant to the members. Lisa and Rosé seemed bewildered upon receiving the vouchers, unable to even force a smile. The meeting had a tense atmosphere, with Jennie admitting to feeling uncomfortable. Despite being rookies at the time, the BLACKPINK members were not afraid to express their unease and discomfort.

This was not the first instance where BLACKPINK made an effort to distance themselves from Seungri. During their concert, when Seungri appeared and joked that Jennie had touched his shoulder backstage, Jennie promptly refuted, “I have never done such a thing.”

After the Burning Sun Scandal, netizens have finally come to understand why members of BLACKPINK would always have a certain expression on their faces whenever they encountered Seungri. This realization has shed light on the girls’ attempts to avoid interacting with him.
