Anna Kendrick’s latest film, Woman of the Hour, shines a spotlight on an intriguing true crime narrative and has already received an impressive score on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans can look forward to its release on Netflix, which is just around the corner.
If the second season of Monster didn’t quite meet your expectations, you might find Woman of the Hour to be a refreshing alternative. While it explores true crime themes, it also offers sharp social commentary regarding misogyny, all set against a backdrop of a bizarre real-life story.
Directed by Kendrick in her inaugural project at the helm, this film tells the harrowing true tale of Rodney Alcala, a notorious serial killer who was a contestant on the iconic ’70s game show The Dating Game.
Alongside this chilling story, the film centers on Cheryl Bradshaw (portrayed by Kendrick), an aspiring actress who unwittingly selected Alcala on the show, ignorant of the fact that he had already claimed the lives of at least five women by that time.
Since its upload to YouTube, footage from the original episode has garnered significant attention, with a clip from Inside Edition racking up over 9.1 million views as of now.
Transforming this content into a film that primarily focuses on Bradshaw and the societal perceptions of women during that era is no small undertaking. However, Kendrick has thus far received accolades from critics for her efforts.
Woman of the Hour boasts a remarkable 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Vox remarked, “The film cleverly integrates the numerous ways women are conditioned to tolerate male behavior.”
In a similar vein, The Wrap emphasized that “first-time director Kendrick achieves a balance, creating a film that is both oddly engaging and deeply unsettling.”
