Anthony Mackie Discusses His Evolving Role as Captain America in ‘Brave New World’
In a recent appearance at the Disney APAC Content Showcase in Singapore, Anthony Mackie shared insights into his portrayal of Captain America in the highly anticipated film, Captain America: Brave New World. Mackie stated that his version of the iconic character will rely more on “brains than brawn,” highlighting a strategic approach to heroism.
Having spent nearly a decade as Sam Wilson, the loyal ally to Steve Rogers within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Mackie’s character is stepping into the spotlight in the upcoming 2025 release. Wilson, who previously served as the supporting character, is now positioned as the lead.
The Evolution of Sam Wilson
Mackie emphasizes that Sam Wilson’s journey is both straightforward and complex. “Sam’s evolution is simple,” he explained. “He’s still a counsellor. He’s still serving soldiers, but at the same time, now he’s a leader of his community in the country.” This transition reflects not just a change in title but a deepening of his character’s responsibilities.
Unlike Steve Rogers, who was enhanced by the Super Soldier Serum, Wilson possesses no such physical augmentation. This limitation compels him to devise alternative strategies for confronting threats. “It’s very different with the serum – you can fight anybody,” Mackie remarked. “When you don’t have the serum, you have to be smart and engineer different ways of defeating [enemies].” This insight highlights Wilson’s emphasis on intellect and collaboration, positioning him as a friend and advisor rather than a brute force hero.
A Continuation of Grounded Storytelling
As for the thematic direction of Captain America: Brave New World, Mackie assures fans that the film will maintain the grounded, realistic approach that characterized earlier installments, such as The First Avenger, The Winter Soldier, and Civil War. According to him, each Marvel entry explores diverse genres, yet Captain America stories remain tethered to real-world scenarios.
“This movie stays in line with the original Captain America, capturing that thrill, espionage, and grounded storytelling that genuinely invests the audience in the narrative,” Mackie stated, indicating a focus on character-driven plots that evoke real emotional responses.
