The unveiling of health bars in Apex Legends Season 22 sparked controversy among players, who have expressed dissatisfaction with the implementation of this mechanic.
The implementation of HP bars was intended to provide a better indication of an opponent’s remaining health and shields, and it has achieved this purpose while also clearly displaying the locations of targets that have been hit. The developers are satisfied with how it is functioning.
Despite the intended purpose, Apex Legends players are expressing doubts about its effectiveness and have noted that this mechanic has unexpectedly weakened certain characters for Season 22.
As noted by a Reddit user, the smoke abilities of characters like Bangalore and Caustic become ineffective once they are hit with the first shot, as their health bar reveals their location. This makes taking cover behind objects that only obscure vision, and not bullets, pointless now if the enemy has already landed a shot on you.

Moreover, while Mirage’s decoys lack health bars, he himself does not. This allows enemies to determine his true location by targeting the Mirage with their gunfire during his ultimate, thereby severely weakening his entire set of abilities. The same applies to his passive stealth while reviving allies.
Mad Maggie’s once powerful passive ability has been significantly weakened, as all characters now possess the ability to see their targets after hitting them. Additionally, it is now impossible to deceive opponents with a full red shield, as they will easily see through the bluff and know that you are low on health.
There are those who believe that this has “ruined”the enjoyment of Apex, while there are also many “less skilled”players who feel that they are now able to have a more enjoyable experience with the game.

One Redditor claimed that, as a bad player, they enjoy using them. However, they also acknowledge that these tools can diminish the level of skill required in the game.
It was also suggested that the inclusion of health bars may be catering to less skilled players, but a more effective solution would be for Apex to improve its onboarding process for newer players.
“In my opinion, flattening the skill curve can have negative effects on the long-term health of a game. Instead, developers should focus on implementing ways to genuinely improve the skills of lower-ranked players, rather than relying on crutches.”
