Apex Legends Restricts Specific PC Platforms to Fight Against Cheating

Apex Legends has announced that players utilizing the Linux operating system on PC or Steam Deck will no longer be able to participate in the battle royale due to ongoing issues with cheating.

The recent advancements in cheat detection have primarily affected Steam Deck users. After considerable requests, Rockstar Games finally rolled out an anti-cheat system for GTA Online. However, this third-party tool has adversely impacted gameplay compatibility on Steam Decks, leaving many players unable to access the game. Despite these setbacks, the community largely acknowledged the significant improvements brought about by the implementation of anti-cheat measures.

Following this trend, Respawn Entertainment mirrored this decision by restricting access to the game for users on Linux OS.

In their statement, Respawn Entertainment clarified, “We had to consider the number of legitimate players on Linux/the Steam Deck against the overall health of the Apex player community. Although Linux users represent a small demographic, their issues have disproportionately affected many games. This ultimately led us to today’s decision.”

This update does not impact players accessing Apex Legends via Windows or Steam.

Given that the Steam Deck typically operates on Linux, users will need to install Windows to continue playing.

Recently, the Apex Legends development team has been focused on tackling cheating within the game. On September 5, Respawn Entertainment disclosed that over 100,000 accounts are banned monthly due to cheating activities.

Respawn’s relentless pursuit of maintaining game integrity has not come without challenges. On September 21, a significant anti-cheat update was implemented in Apex Legends, which unfortunately led to an increase in false bans and crashing issues on PlayStation platforms.

While this new policy negatively affects some Steam Deck players, it is ultimately a move intended to enhance the gaming experience for the broader community.

Respawn emphasized, “Maintaining competitive integrity is paramount for our team, and we are exploring numerous strategies to combat cheating—this is merely one of them. We are dedicated to providing more frequent updates regarding these matters and appreciate your ongoing feedback.”
