Apothecary Diaries Season 2: Release Date and Streaming Options

The highly anticipated The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 is set to premiere in January 2025, marking one of the most significant anime releases of the month. The debut season, which premiered in 2023, exceeded expectations, quickly gaining a dedicated fan base despite not having massive international appeal initially.

This surge in popularity can be seen in the impressive sales figures for the original novel, which soared to the top of Oricon’s best-selling charts in 2024, achieving over 1 million copies sold. In 2023, it had already ranked second with 400,000 copies sold, indicating a robust demand for the content.

With the first season concluding in March, fans have been eagerly anticipating the return of the series. The second season is scheduled to air in the early days of January 2025.

The second season is slated to commence airing in Japan on January 10, 2025, at 11 PM (JST).

In a bid to cater to a global audience, streaming platforms will release episodes simultaneously with the Japanese broadcast, typically making them available a few hours afterward.

Viewing Options for The Apothecary Diaries Season 2

Crunchyroll has announced that it will stream the series across the Americas, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and CIS regions starting January 10. However, the exact timing for the episodes has yet to be finalized.

The platform has also confirmed plans to provide dubbed versions in English, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, and German, which will be released at a later date.

In regions such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand, Netflix will continue to stream the series, along with Japan after each episode has aired on TV. The first season only offered the original Japanese audio, and it is likely that the new episodes will follow this format as well.

Expectations for Season 2

Season 2 will adapt the narrative from Volume 3 of the original novel. This installment features a compelling subplot where Jinshi seeks assistance in teaching servants how to read and write, while Maomao investigates a series of unusual incidents tied to political machinations within the royal court.

Moreover, the storyline delves deeper into the character of the Empress Dowager, exploring the mysterious “curse” that surrounds her. Among the most talked-about moments anticipated by fans is the memorable “frog scene,” where Maomao inadvertently uncovers significant information about Jinshi, which further develops their relationship.

While the episode count for the upcoming season has not been disclosed, given that the first season adapted a book over one cour (approximately 12 episodes), it would be reasonable to expect the same structure. Therefore, if the adaptation spans two cours, Volume 4 may also be included.

In terms of production, Norihiro Naganuma, who served as both writer and director during the first season, will return as the head writer. Akimi Fudesaka, who collaborated with Naganuma, is slated to take over as director. Despite this change, the principal cast and crew remain consistent, reassuring fans about the animation quality they’ve come to adore.

Additionally, the esteemed vocalist Lilas Ikuta of YOASOBI will perform the new opening theme, titled ‘Hyakkaryoran.’ Given the popularity of YOASOBI’s previous anime themes, such as those for Oshi no Ko and Gundam: Witch from Mercury, the upcoming season is bound to generate considerable hype.
