With the recent announcement of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, speculation has surged regarding the potential discontinuation of Warzone. However, the evidence supporting this notion remains scant.
The teaser trailer unveiled characters parachuting into Avalon, a vast environment that incorporates many locations from Black Ops 6. Since players discovered that private matches allowed full exploration of this area, anticipation for its inclusion in Warzone has only intensified.
The brief gameplay segment showcased in the Black Ops 7 announcement bore a striking resemblance to Blackout, the franchise’s original battle royale mode, primarily due to the inclusion of a wingsuit. This has led to widespread assumptions of a forthcoming Blackout 2.0.
Examining the Future of Warzone
No official confirmation exists indicating that Warzone is set to be discontinued in favor of a new Blackout experience with Black Ops 7. Despite the visuals from the recent Xbox Games Showcase appearing reminiscent of Blackout, they were primarily drawn from the campaign mode, with battle royale features typically revealed closer to their launch.
So, where do these rumors regarding Warzone’s demise originate? A recent post on X/Twitter by content creator ‘Reave’, which claimed that Warzone would be “officially sunsetted”in favor of a new Blackout mode, has garnered significant attention, amassing over 700, 000 views.
Blackout 2 will arrive Season 2 of Black Ops 7 and will be played on Avalon on next-gen consoles and PC onlythe current version of Warzone (Verdansk and Rebirth) will exist with a BR Casual Solos game mode and BR casual Quads game mode “Warzone”will be officially sunsetted pic.twitter.com/4zO0bqM3zk

This statement continued, indicating that while the existing Warzone maps like Verdansk and Rebirth would remain available with casual game modes, the original Warzone experience might be phased out.
Nonetheless, the source of this ‘leak’ remains ambiguous and hasn’t been confirmed by any reputable insiders.
Another prominent leaker, TheGhostOfHope, suggested that Avalon was initially intended for a Battle Royale mode but was reallocated for use within the campaign. They noted that unless significant changes are made, the integration of large maps into Warzone while still supporting older consoles like PS4 and Xbox One might not be feasible.
That Avalon shot IS NOT Warzone. It is from the co-op campaign. Like I leaked before it was canned for Battle Royale and was being used for Campaign/Outbreak. Unless things changed and they found a way to rotate big maps for Warzone while supporting PS4/Xbox One.

Possible Closure of Warzone with Future Titles
It’s plausible that Black Ops 7 may mark the final integration of Warzone. Earlier this year, TheGhostOfHope remarked that Modern Warfare 4, set for release in 2026, might not include Warzone 3 if the current iteration fails to attract and retain players.
Without comprehensive data on player retention across platforms, assessing the success of Verdansk’s return remains challenging. However, such dynamics will undoubtedly influence the trajectory of Black Ops 7 upon its anticipated release in late 2025.
