Following the incredible success of Space Marine 2, how prepared is Saber Interactive for a sequel? According to the developers, very much so.
Space Marine 2 has delivered precisely what a Warhammer 40K enthusiast would want in a video game adaptation. Its intense combat reflects the dark setting, supplemented with numerous references appealing to hardcore fans.
Notably, it earned the endorsement of renowned Warhammer superfan Henry Cavill, and his approval is bolstered by the hundreds of thousands of other fans. According to Steam charts, Space Marine 2 has emerged as the most-played Warhammer game ever.
Considering this incredible success and the lucrative opportunities it presents for publishers, a sequel to Space Marine 2 seems like an obvious decision. The developers at Saber Interactive appear to share this sentiment, with discussions about a continuation of the game’s story already happening internally.
We’d be excited to see additional chapters feature in the campaign for a potential Space Marine 3.
Space Marine 2 devs discuss the potential for a sequel
In an interview with IGN, Saber CCO Tim Willits mentioned that Game Director Dmitry Grigorenko “has proposed some story ideas that could either be DLC or a sequel.” Willits did note that these proposals are still in the preliminary stages. “We’re literally just catching our breath,” he added.
Despite these modest caveats, throughout the rest of the interview, Willits spoke about the likelihood of a Space Marine 2 sequel as if it were a certainty. Given the game’s success relative to the studio size and publisher, both parties appear committed to the Warhammer franchise.
“I can confidently say that we will not disappoint our Warhammer fans in the future,” Willits expressed. “It’s too significant of a success! I understand that’s an obvious statement to make, but hopefully, we’ll be engaged in creating Space Marine content for a long time.”
The game’s open-ended conclusion suggests that Saber Interactive believes Space Marine 3 is a legitimate possibility, and given support from Games Workshop, it seems likely to materialize. Meanwhile, Space Marine 2 features a comprehensive post-launch roadmap that should keep players engaged for the foreseeable future.
