Ariel Helwani provides update on delay with McGregor vs Chandler press conference

Conor McGregor is set to make his comeback to the octagon in a match against Michael Chandler at UFC 303, although their initial plan was to have a press conference on June 3 before their meeting.

Nevertheless, UFC decided to delay the pre-fight press conference, which was supposed to take place in Dublin, Ireland in front of a live audience, a mere 12 hours before it was set to begin.

Concerns were raised immediately after UFC released their official statement about the sudden change in plans. The statement can be found at https://twitter.com/ufc/status/1797478322198483171?s=61&t=URe8qAbUy4OteMUR2MH5fQ, and it stated:

Although the UFC and McGregor did not provide any additional information about the delay, Ariel Helwani shared his knowledge with fans on the MMA Hour podcast.

“Helwani revealed that I received news late Sunday morning that the [McGregor vs Chandler] press conference, originally planned for June 3 at Noon ET, was under threat.”

Upon discovering, I noticed that UFC had announced on all of its social media platforms that the press conference had been delayed.

“At present, it remains uncertain for all parties involved whether there will be a press conference in Dublin prior to the upcoming McGregor fight.”

Afterwards, the experienced MMA insider dispelled any speculation about any scandalous behavior being the cause for the delay.

“I can assure you, without a doubt, that none of the mentioned legal issues, incidents, or criminal activities are involved in this situation.”

“There are no protocols in place for drug testing or anti-doping. My intention is to assure everyone that there is no controversial or sensational story involved in this situation.”

Helwani acknowledged that he comprehends the reasoning behind the inquiries, particularly in light of the recent circulation of videos allegedly showing McGregor partying in the days leading up to UFC 302.

“There have been videos circulating of McGregor enjoying himself, and I am aware that Dana White has commented on some of those videos.”

Based on my impression, we will soon discover if this is a real possibility. All the people I have spoken to have confirmed that he is prepared, focused, and eager to begin.

Ultimately, the performance and fight will reveal the truth. We are anticipating for this to take place on June 29, and we will witness how things unfold.

Despite not having competed in the UFC for almost three years, McGregor has been occupied with recovering from a broken leg he sustained during his fight against Dustin Poirier in 2021.

Chandler’s absence from the Octagon has lasted two years, as his last fight also resulted in a loss against Poirier at UFC 281.

As per Helwani’s statement, the main event that has been eagerly awaited will still take place on June 29 at UFC 303.

As Helwani was still broadcasting, McGregor used his official X account to send a message to fans. In this message, he clarified the reason for the cancellation of the press conference.

“Today’s press conference had to be cancelled due to various unforeseen obstacles, in collaboration with the UFC. I extend my sincere apologies to my loyal Irish fans and fans worldwide for any inconvenience caused.”

“I am grateful for your unwavering passion and support. I am eagerly anticipating putting on the best show in the octagon of all time.”

McGregor referenced the press conference as “cancelled”in his post, but the UFC has not yet made an official statement regarding a potential rescheduling of the event.
