Article Spotlight: ILLIT’s Role in Recent Controversy and Shindong’s Support for the Group

After their appearance on JTBC’s “Knowing Bros,”ILLIT received mixed reactions for their response to hateful comments about their skills, with some accusing them of “playing the victim.”

The group (Yunah, Moka, Minju, Wonhee, and Iroha) were invited as special guests to join the entertainment program on May 25. They had a delightful spring picnic with the MCs at Jeongok Port and Jebudo.

During their outing, the group had a conversation with the hosts of “Knowing Bros”where they discussed their experiences with being cast and their involvement in the survival program “R U Next?”, which ultimately led to the creation of ILLIT.

Reflecting on their journey, the members shared their struggles along the way, with Wonhee stating:

“I feel like I’m trying to walk on eggshells a lot. My trainee period was short (so) I made a lot of mistakes.”

Following that, Minju stated:

“I am mentally weak. When I read the comments, I feel like I am falling deeply into it.”

Upon hearing this, Moka also agreed.

“I’m similar to Minju. I tend to read comments a lot. I’m not hurt by them per se, but there are times when I think of the comments when I’m on stage. I get scared.”

After that, Super Junior’s Heechul provided comfort to his younger colleagues.

“I hope you put more meaning into the compliments and supportive comments you are getting. If you lose there, you lose.”

Shindong said:

“What you can do now is take revenge with your skills. All you have to do is practice hard and show that you are good at it. So that they can’t criticize you.”

Upon the circulation of this specific part on the internet, K-pop stans were angered by the group’s behavior and claimed they were “playing the victim.”

Netters then teased them for their “lack of idol skills,”with the intention of encouraging them to see Shindong’s advice to “practice hard”as constructive feedback rather than an insult.

The following are some of the comments:

  • “Is this a ‘Knowing Bros’-style scam? Taking revenge with skills? You can’t take your revenge if you don’t have skills, haha.”
  • “The ‘skills’ didn’t even exist in the first place.”
  • “Playing victims again. The more they become like this, the more I’m hating them.”
  • “Are you guys on a healing camp?”
  • “If you guys do this, it will only cause you more resentment.”
  • “If you improve your skills, don’t you think the hate comments will also decrease?”
  • “It’s been a month since you haven’t been active in the first place, so I don’t think it’s worth appearing on a variety show during NewJeans’ comeback and doing ‘piko’ (cosplaying as victims).”
  • “I don’t really like Shindong, but Shindong is right. It’s right to use your skills to put people to rest. But the problem is that you don’t have the skills to take revenge, haha.”
  • “Stop this victim cosplaying.”
