Netflix’s documentary, Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal, features several couples who were affected by the hack. Among them are Sam and Nia Rader – but what is their story and is their relationship still intact?
The narrative behind Netflix’s docu-series on Ashley Madison could easily be the plot of a movie. From its beginnings, the dating website for individuals seeking extramarital affairs, with its motto “Life is Short. Have an affair,”has sparked controversy.
In 2015, the conversation shifted as Ashley Madison was hit by a major data breach carried out by a group of unknown hackers called The Impact Team. This resulted in the exposure of millions of users’ personal information on the dark web.
As the scandal unfolded, spectators looked on with a hint of schadenfreude, but its repercussions were very real for users, ultimately leading to at least two suicides. For Sam and Nia Rader, the experience was a living nightmare, and they even appeared in a Netflix true crime documentary to tell their side of the story.
Sam and Nia Rader: A Brief Introduction
In 2014, Sam and Nia Rader became viral sensations on YouTube after sharing a video of themselves lip-syncing to ‘Love Is An Open Door’ from Frozen. The video, titled ‘Good Looking Parents Sing Disney’s Frozen (Love Is an Open Door)’, brought them instant fame.
At the time of writing, the video had amassed 23 million views, which motivated the couple to embark on a vlogging journey centered around their family life.
In 2015, their viral success continued. Their video, titled ‘HUSBAND SHOCKS WIFE WITH PREGNANCY ANNOUNCEMENT!’ featured Sam secretly taking a pregnancy test in the bathroom after Nia had forgotten to flush.
At the time of writing, the video has garnered 19 million views. Despite not being the top-earning YouTubers, their channel boasts a considerable 2.51 million subscribers.
Symphony, Abram, Juliet, and Josie are the four children that Sam and Nia have together. In a majority of their content, they openly share their religious beliefs and their commitment to living a Christian lifestyle as a family.
What Happened to Sam and Nia Rader?
As exposed in the docuseries, Sam Rader was caught cheating on his wife Nia when he was implicated in the 2015 hacking scandal.
Sam and Nia tied the knot at a young age and quickly began building their family. While they were content in their marriage, Sam expressed that he was overwhelmed by the various responsibilities that came with being a husband, a father, and an ER nurse.
As he encountered an advertisement for Ashley Madison, he became curious. He created an account and began conversing with several women. However, once their YouTube success began to soar, he stated, “My urges for infidelity simply faded away, and I subsequently deleted my Ashley Madison account during that time.”
The situation remained positive until the summer of 2015, when The Impact Team released their initial Ashley Madison data breach. This included details such as user emails, names, and credit card transactions.
Sam was worried that his name would attract attention. “It could have seriously damaged my reputation, especially as a Christian,”he stated.
As he made his way to a vlogger fair, he was browsing through X/Twitter when he came across a post from someone who had noticed his name in the leak. “I immediately felt a wave of dread and thought that my life was ruined,”Sam shared.
Determined to handle the situation immediately, he brought Nia to a restaurant in the airport and clarified to her that he had joined Ashley Madison but had not been unfaithful. He insisted that it was all a misunderstanding.
Nia expressed that she “still felt betrayed,” however, she made the decision to forgive him and confront the issue directly on YouTube. Sam released a video in which he apologized for his actions and stated, “I have never had an affair with anyone during the time I have been married to Nia.”
Despite the temporary calm, the situation resurfaced when The Impact Team struck once again, this time releasing a larger amount of files. Upon their return from the vlogger fair, Sam and Nia were met with a flurry of activity in their family group chat.
Despite not looking, Nia received a text message that read, “Sam, you must be completely truthful.”She later discovered that he had downplayed the true extent of what had occurred, and his hidden truths went beyond just Ashley Madison.
Feeling cornered, he made the decision to tell Nia everything. “Massage parlors, strip clubs, those were convenient ways to satisfy my desire for more pleasure. I thought having extramarital sex would add excitement to my life,”Sam confessed.
In addition, he had engaged in flirtatious or emotional relationships with acquaintances of theirs, and had made advances towards a few friends who did not return his feelings.
Nia expressed, “He went after someone who was dear to me and she ultimately removed herself from my life. Because of you, I lost a cherished friend. It was a lot to process at the time.”
Is the Relationship Between Sam and Nia Rader Still Going Strong?
Despite the extreme betrayal, the final episode of Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal reveals that Sam and Nia Rader have remained together and are still married.
As Nia accepted the reality of the situation, she eventually consented to attending marriage counseling with Sam and their pastor. “Despite my anger towards his actions, I could still sense a change in him,”she elaborated.

The Netflix series first conducts separate interviews with the pair, but they ultimately reunite at the conclusion, with Sam revealing, “Nia ultimately granted me a second chance.”
Despite having many regrets, he stands by his decision to hack Ashley Madison. “It was necessary for us to reach where we are today,”he explained.
The duo still vlogs to this day, with their most recent YouTube video featuring a press interview for the streaming service.
