Asmongold Cautions Twitch About the Risks of “Unsafe” Drinking Streams

Twitch streamer Asmongold has issued a warning to the Amazon-owned streaming platform, urging a reevaluation of its policies surrounding drinking streams, which he labels as “unsafe.”

In October, Twitch introduced a feature called Enforcement Notes, aimed at clarifying the types of content permitted and swiftly addressing any emerging controversial trends.

The introduction of Enforcement Notes has sparked backlash from VTubers, who are expressing dissatisfaction with regulations concerning their attire, particularly regarding coverage of the hips, even though they are essentially digital characters.

Moreover, Twitch has offered clarifications on drinking streams, noting that soliciting alcohol shots in exchange for subscriptions is not allowed.

However, the guidelines state: “Drinking goal streams are permissible, as long as the drinking does not become excessive and is not likely to lead to harm.”

For instance, it is acceptable to host a drinking stream in celebration of reaching a subscription milestone.

Asmongold opposes this interpretation, warning that the platform could face consequences from permitting drinking streams.

During a broadcast review of the Enforcement Notes, he critiqued the policies on drinking streams, arguing that the distinction between permissible and impermissible content is “too nuanced.”

“Twitch is making a significant error by allowing any of this,” he stated. “The nuances are complex and the line is difficult to define; it would be wiser to exclude alcohol or its consumption from any reward-based payment structure.”

“This could lead to considerable issues. The policy is highly susceptible to exploitation, it’s vague, and hard to grasp. They will regret the terminology used. What constitutes a drinking stream may vary in safety for different individuals. I simply disagree with this policy.”

He further commented that he views drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana in the same light, asserting that he would prohibit both if given the chance.

Given the ongoing controversy surrounding the Enforcement Notes, it remains to be seen whether Twitch will provide additional clarification or implement changes, especially with numerous streamers voicing their frustrations regarding the current guidelines.
