Asmongold Acknowledges Possible Role in Twitch “Adpocalypse”
In a recent discussion, popular streamer Asmongold addressed allegations made by fellow streamer HasanAbi, who accused him of contributing to the rise of the so-called “adpocalypse”on Twitch. This term refers to the exodus of advertisers from the platform due to controversial content, paralleling a similar event experienced on YouTube in 2016 and 2017.
Understanding the Twitch Adpocalypse
In late October, industry observers suggested that the departure of advertisers from Twitch could mirror the YouTube adpocalypse, which forced many creators to shift towards family-friendly content. If Twitch were to face a similar fate, Asmongold admitted that he might bear some responsibility for the situation, aligning with HasanAbi’s concerns regarding platform content.
HasanAbi expressed his frustration, stating, “When Asmongold engages in such actions, it is a direct consequence.” He emphasized the negative impact of collaborating with individuals who prioritize chaos over constructive content. He underscored that platforms yielding to such behavior could inadvertently harm the broader creator community.
A Candid Reflection
Asmongold later viewed a clip featuring HasanAbi’s critique and responded candidly to his audience. He stated, “While I don’t believe I am solely to blame, I acknowledge that my actions may have played a role in the unfolding adpocalypse, and for that, you’re welcome.” He argued that the situation could have escalated differently had there been more accountability among creators.
Moreover, Asmongold pointed out a concerning trend where some individuals attempt to justify harmful behavior, which he decried as unacceptable. “This has always been wrong, and the double standard is apparent to everyone,” he added.
Implications for Content Creators
Asmongold referred to a previous incident where he faced backlash for derogatory remarks about Palestinians, which led to a two-week suspension from Twitch. This has raised questions about the potential consequences of the adpocalypse for content creators in the future.
While the long-term effects remain uncertain, recent revelations highlight that substantial earnings still exist within the Twitch ecosystem. For instance, 100 Thieves CEO Nadeshot reportedly earned nearly $250,000 during a brief subathon, showcasing that financial opportunities are still abundant.
However, should advertising revenues decline, it may necessitate significant changes across the platform, affecting both the type of content produced and the creators who thrive there.
