Popular Twitch streamer Asmongold is responding to backlash after sharing his views on the portrayal of female leads in video games, specifically criticizing what he termed “ugly female leads.” This discussion intensified following the announcement of the upcoming game “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet”by Naughty Dog at the 2024 Game Awards.
Asmongold’s controversial comments come in light of rising debates surrounding female characters in both “Intergalactic”and the eagerly anticipated “Witcher 4.”Players have been vocal about their opinions, with some labeling the main female characters as unattractive, stirring up a heated online discourse.
Jordan A. Mun, the main character of “Intergalactic,”has faced criticism for her unconventional appearance.
In his YouTube video, Asmongold argued that the majority of the player base for “Intergalactic”is male, suggesting that they desire characters with whom they can identify and feel represented. He posited that a female protagonist lacking conventional beauty may not resonate with the game’s intended audience.
“I think the mindset of putting something into a game that players actively don’t like is more significant than the enjoyment of the customer,” he stated. “That mindset is going to permeate the entire game.” Asmongold, however, did clarify that his critique was aimed specifically at “Intergalactic,”while expressing no issues with CD Projekt RED’s “Witcher 4.”
Asmongold Remains Defiant Amidst Criticism
Following his statements, Asmongold faced a wave of criticism from the online community, with many users retaliating by attacking his own appearance. Nevertheless, the streamer has maintained his stance, expressing that he wouldn’t want to play a character resembling himself in any game. Instead, he prefers to embody traditionally attractive characters.
“I always find this funny: people want to call me ugly, but I’m not trying to put myself in the f*cking game! If I saw a character that looked like me in a video game, I’d say, ‘Change it.’ I don’t even want to be that!” he joked during the discussion.
Asmongold further elaborated, stating, “People can cry and b*tch, and get mad, but at the end of the day, I’m going to be right. You can call me ugly, racist, or a terrible person, but nobody is proving me wrong. I’m just observing this.”
His criticisms did not go unchallenged; fellow Twitch streamer Hasan mocked gamers who equate a character’s attractiveness to enjoyment, asserting, “Not everything has to be instant gratification. You don’t have to hyper-sexualize every female character… You should be ashamed to even have those thoughts.”
As the gaming community grapples with these discussions, both “Witcher 4″and “Intergalactic”have become focal points for players threatening boycotts based on their initial trailers. There are even ongoing debates regarding whether Ciri should reprise her role as the central character in the series’ next installment.
